SOS App broken??

Just tried to open the SOS App, which normally works fine. But now get error screen host name cannot be found. I’m sure my iPad is ok (9th gen running iOS 17.6.1)

Any clues team?

Just to confirm. By SOS app do you mean the iPad app where you download and read the digital edition of the magazine?

I know there have been some updates to the app in recent months. So it would be worth making a visit to the App Store, search for Sound On Sound (a couple of options come up, I chose Sound On Sound UK) and see if there's a more recent version available for you.

My iPad shows the latest version is 21.10

Got the email this morning telling me that the February edition was out, great, opened the app on my Pixel 6a running Android 15 and was told I had to buy it or restore purchases. Subscription is active till August. Tried to restore purchases, didn't work. Logged out and back in, no change, OK, nuke it from orbit and start again - uninstalled the app and went to the Play Store. The app isn't there! Checked my apps/uninstalled, nope. Checked a general search for Sound On Sound, Sound on Sound USA and SOS. Nada.

I'm guessing this is my phone updating to Android 15 a couple of weeks ago and a lag before the app catches up, can anyone confirm the app working on15 please?

Currently there are some issues with the digital replica mag which should be sorted out on Monday. That said, we wouldn't have expected ongoing problems with the app since January (and yours may be an unrelated issue) so if that's been your experience then please confirm and we'll get it looked into.

Tim’s issue is that he hasn’t been able to reload the magazine app since he deleted it back in February as it’s not showing up at all for him in the Play store.

Is the Android app no longer supported and the digital magazine accessed a different way now? (I’ve never used the digital mag except via the web site so have no ideas on this).

(I can see all the FAQs refer just to iOS App versions).

Eddie, the app hasn't been available in the play store since January when I first posted the issue, can't say before that. I haven't tried the replica mag, can't comment on that. The app makes the magazine readable for me on a phone, the pdf is fine on a tablet or laptop.

I've received some feedback.

There have been ongoing problems with the Android version of the SOS App.

The team will be continuing to work to resolve matters this month. They are hoping that it will be fixed but it is still uncertain.

Sorry, but Google are playing silly beggars, and we simply still cannot talk to a human these days at Alphabet who understands what an App for their Google Play store is! It is deeply frustrating.

SOS launched its App in 2012 initially on iPad only for several years, before moving to a different platform host that permitted dual iOS/AndroidOS apps.

In truth, we have less than a thousand Android app users -- but it's a fait accompli perhaps, and if our app worked well with all of the latest AndroidOS versions and the myriad tablet designs, we would for sure win over more customers and have greater numbers.

Sadly, if we cannot find a solution, we are likely to abandon Android completely and adopt a generic web-based platform instead.

I've just re-subscribed to SOS after several years away and I have to admit, the lack of a working android app is a real disappointment to me, as the app made the SOS experience slick and easy when I subscribed before.

Having to download PDFs everywhere is not great . Fingers crossed you get some techie love from Google to help resolve this.

Thanks Growler1970 - we are deeply frustrated by the problem, too.

Your existing Digital Sub does give you access to the page-flip REPLICA edition (as well as Web article versions of content), though the Replica requires a wi-fi connection to view it on the move. We also have a new digital edition we are trialling on a platform called Issuu.com/soundonsoundmag - it is NOT integrated currently with our back office, but most likely will be later this year. Check it out.

Sorry no feedback from anyone at Google to help us resolve our Android app issues. I will prioritise it next week when the manager involved returns from holiday.

So sorry this problem has dragged on....

Im told there have been some very frustrating technical problems with Google which are taking a long time to resolve. The genuine hope is to resolve the underlying issue, update the App, and have it all working again in March (this year 2026)!
