Audient ID 4 No volume problem (fixed)

Post by shane536 »

Hi, I just joined this forum to post a fix to a problem in the hopes that it will save someone else from going completely insane. :headbang:

I have an Audient iD4 as my DAW interface (Windows 10) and have been having problems with the signal path entering the Audient, either as an input or output signal, and dying inside there. A signal will leave my Kemper, go into the Audient and the LED indicators will show a signal being received, yet nothing arrives at my PC. Or I'll attempt playback from my PC, my DAW indicators will show gain, the Audient interface will show gain, yet I hear nothing in my Headphones etc.

Basically, despite everything visually working as it's meant to, there is no sound.

I am not sure what causes this problem, but the solution is that you have to go into the Audient interface on your PC, and jiggle all the sliders slightly. No, not the physical knobs on the box, they do nothing, you have to move them on the PC. Like, literally just wiggle the sliders on the screen up and down. Then it will suddenly work.

I know, I don't get it either, but it's as if they get "stuck" somehow and by moving them, suddenly the gain gets reset to the correct level.

Then it will work correctly for the rest of your session. Until next time you power up your computer and have to do it again. In fact it's the first thing I do when I turn on my computer, go into the ID4 interface, and jiggle all six sliders, Mic 1 and 2, DAW 1-4, otherwise, no sound.

Hopefully this saves someone some stress, it took me forever to find a fix. :madas: I have literally tried reinstalling DAWs, swapping out guitar cables, updating audio drivers etc etc while screaming and pulling out my hair.

Apart from this glitch, it works fine, and I have no idea what causes it.

Interesting. My ID4 suffers from a similar problem that when the computer comes out of sleep mode it sometimes doesn't work as you describe. The fix I have used is to momentarily disconnect the USB cable. This "resets" it, but it is then necessary to turn up the volume knob on the ID4 since this defaults to zero.

This only happens perhaps one in 5 or 10 wakes from sleep. Rebooting the computer will also fix it.

I haven't tried your solution, but I will experiment with it.

This has been going on since I bought the ID4 several years ago, and I have tried updating the firmware, drivers, and going from win10 to win11. Nothing has helped.

It would be worthwhile passing this feedback — OS, situations, symptoms, solutions — to Audient. It sounds like a driver issue with something not being set correctly after coming out of sleep mode.

I did discuss this with audient a few years ago and they suggested a few things, including fiddling with the USB power modes, but nothing helped. I have since got a new computer and that still has the issue. Since it only happens now and then, and the fix is easy, I just live with it.

Thank you very much for posting this. I recently purchased an iD4 and a pro tools subscription. I've been working on the problem of no headset sound for 17 days. I didn't know if it was my ignorance of pro tools, an iD4 problem, a cable problem or a driver problem. You have no idea how relieved I am to resolve the issue. I am now REALLY annoyed (nice word) with Audient for doing this too me. Once again - thanks for the solution to my problem.

I wonder if this might have something to do with the fact that when you shut down Windows you are often just telling it to do some form of hibernation? The system state is written to the disk so that, in theory, Windows will start faster.

I've just had issues with this (though not audio related) and found that my laptop actually starts faster if you disable Fast Startup in the settings

https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articl ... in-Windows

shows that it is an issue with other interfaces too.

Fast startup can cause a number of problems and in fact I've just been working in my day job on an automated check and fix for this for our customers, so they can disable it automatically.

One of Microsoft's bright ideas that doesn't quite work out as panned. Luckily it's simple enough to disable.

It could be a Win security update. I recently had the same issue with my Audient id22 after a Win 'update'...Software console faders reset and it all works fine. Strange, as it's not a problem I've experienced before.
