Hi Folks,
I want to get back into home studio production and am in the market for some mid-range active monitors (~$1K-1.2K for a pair). I previously used Mackie HR624s (1st generation) for home production and liked these monitors very much.
Couple of questions:
1) Do folks have thoughts on the HR624 Mk2? They were reviewed very favorably in SOS, are still sold by Mackie, but were released back in 2007, so maybe there is something superior now?
2) Are there other comparable monitors in this price range that people would highly recommend? The HR624s had a nice, clear high and mid range, and flat frequency response down to ~40Hz.
Thank you for your thoughts!
Joe
Mackie HR624 Mk2, still great for the price, or now superseded?

Welcome.
I've not heard the Mackies properly but I'm sure someone with the knowledge will be along in due course.
Assuming you're talking USD, you'll get a pair of KH80s for about $1200.
They're not going to give you a flat response down to 40Hz, but nothing is at that price range. They will give you best in class (I reckon) for everything over about 60Hz though and reasonable control below that.
Check the low end on a decent set of headphones and you're set.
Alternatively, scour the second hand market and see what pops up.

Hi there. My first proper monitors were HR824 mk 1. I loved them at the time- they were a big step up from what I was using previously, but eventually I moved on as you do. You seem to have fond memories of Mackies too hence the question.
Nobody can make the decision for you and confidence in your monitors is a good thing but in my opinion you can get better options these days. I always had a question about what the passive radiator was doing to the bottom end on mine for example.
Like Drew says you can get Neumanns in that price range which are a bang up to date design rather than 20-30 year old technology.
I’d would, and did move on….

Thank you so much for your input - I took your advice and decided to move on and just purchased a pair of Adam A7Vs (arctic white!)
A bit more $$$ than I envisaged spending, but the sound and technology seem hard to beat at this price range, based on the reviews I read. Excited to test drive them in a few days.
