Should I Swap my Apollo x8p Gen2 for a Volt 876?

Post by paulsmusic »

I'm considering swapping my Apollo x8p Gen2 for a Volt 876 and would be grateful for advice on whether there would be much of a noticeable difference between the converters? I don't really need the DSP of the Apollo x8p as most of the UAD plugins I use are available natively. The Volt 876 had a good review in SOS Magazine recently, and I like the simplicity of the compressor and Vintage mode.

I'm still running an Apollo 8p first generation and one reason I bought it was the quality of the converters. It's superb and I make good recordings with it.

You're unlikely to notice any difference compared to the Volt 876 unless you have perfect:

Room acoustics.
Musicians.
Performance.
Esoteric Microphones.
Monitoring Capability.

...... and ears like a bat.

All of which would are meaningless once you release your product to the public!

Bob is right, plus, all you’d do is end up spending money, keep what you’ve got and you won’t have to spend anything.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

Save your money. Make music with what you've already got.

+3.

My main interface is the Apollo Solo, but I owned a Volt 276 for a while, for a bit of 'on the road' recording. (And, why lie, because I fancied buying something new!)

The Volt is nice, and the onboard compressor/preamp buttons can get you to a pleasant sound quickly. Ideal for making demos sound a bit better, without any plugin fiddling.

But the Apollo preamps are slightly nicer, to my ears, and while I also use native UAD plugins most of the time, having the DSP in reserve for the odd apollo-only plugin never hurts.

Bearing in mind resale value, I think the guys who've replied so far are right and you wouldn't even save that much money (if any) doing the trade.

YMMV, obviously, but I'd stick with what you've got.

Thanks for your advice guys! Despite the gear craving, I know what you are saying makes sense, and that making good music is the most important part!
