Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
Hello everybody,
I´m pretty desperate right now. First of all, pleade acknowlegde that normally i have nothing to do with audio etc. Ive come to the forum because i really dont know what to do at this point. I dont even know if this is the right forum for that.
My company is livestreaming on different social media (tiktok, youtube, instagram, twitch etc). We are filming these livestreams with our smartphones (and its crucial, that we keep using smartphones, so OBS or anything like that isnt an option going further). We wanted to use one microphone, the DJI Mic 2 to record audio and then spread it to four of those smartphones.
We just really dont know how. The DJI mic 2 sends out Line Level audio, but we need it as Mic inputs via USB-C. The smartphones should use the Audio from the Mic 2 as their own Mic inputs.
Please can anyone of you help us, how to accomplish that?
The smartphones are the following:
Huawei P30 Pro
Samsung galaxy z Fold 4
Samsung galaxy S24 Ultra
Samsung galaxy S25 Ultra
Weve already tried to link the DJI Mic 2 to the Motu M4 (chatgpt told us, yes we are that uneducated in this topic that we asked chatgpt), and then via LINE to USB C adapter to the smartphones. but we couldnt find a solution.
Any help is really appreciated,
Thanks

Am I reading this correctly that you don't want any other hardware involved? Like a laptop? Or anything else mains powered?
Because if so, I'm afraid I can't really a way to achieve this.
Smarter brains will likely be along in a bit though, possibly with a solution.

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
Are you using 4 different smartphones so that you can stream to 4 different platforms? If so, is there no software that can stream to all the platforms simultaneously?
If you can't use a software solution then one possibly hardware solution would be to split the audio output from the microphone receiver into 4 and then use 4 USB audio interfaces, one on each phone, to get the sound into the phone. This won't be the neatest solution as you will need quite a few wires and extra boxes to do this although someone handy could probably mount it all in a single box with just 4 USB C cables coming out.
Unfortunately I don't have any personal experience of the cheap USB audio interface dongles to know which ones to recommend though Startech are usually a good brand so this
https://cpc.farnell.com/startech/usbcau ... dp/CS38021
might work.

Its okay to have other hardware involved. The only importance is, that the smartphones are in use. We need them because of tiktok. During Livestreams, you can use "Portals" or "Treasure Boxes"! to lure in more people from other livestreams. Then we want them to get hooked and buy stuff from our tiktok shop. And we can only Use those things with the Livestreaming-UI that you have while using smartphones.

OK. So you could take the headphone out from the receiver unit into something like a Behringer HA400 (https://www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Li ... 3YEALw_wcB) and then take the outputs from that into a set of the devices that James linked above.
The thing is you'd be taking a stereo output on TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) and feeding it to a mono input on TRRS, so you might need to make your own cables to take either the tip or ring signal on the output to the second ring on the input.

And if you are making your own cables you could probably dispense with the HA400 and just make a 4 way splitter cable. In fact, you could probably just daisy chain some ready made splitter cables.
The thing is, you really need to get someone who knows about these things involved. I'd bet that there are more appropriate and optimal devices but I don't really want to have to spend hour trawling through the CPC website working out the best way to do this. While the Startech devices will work, you might be better off looking for something similar with a suitable 3.5mm input that matches the output on the DJI mic reciever and then just use a bunch of splitter cables.

The thing is, the ready made splitter cables are still not going to be wired right, they'll be looking for an input on the second ring that any standard audio output won't be sending.

So youre saying, that there is not really another workaround other than making your own cables, other than searching for hours online for a potential "maybe"? Thanks

I think what we're saying is that we can't think of it...
Actually, wait a mo.
Just having an idea. Hold up.

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
If you can find the exact specs for the output on the mics (pin-outs, levels, impedances etc) it would be a big help. Their website just looked extremely vague. Also I'm assuming that all the phones use USB-C and that they are being powered by their own batteries.
The gear to do it can probably be found for not too much money but you may find people with more experience in a video forum because it isn't the kind of gear that we tend to deal much with here.

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
Nope, sorry, dead end.
It's getting the analogue audio signal back into the other phones that's the issue.
I can't see a way around that without making up a set of custom cables - simple to do if you've done it before. But maybe not so easy if you're coming in blind.
I don't know if a video or podcast forum might get you some alternative suggestions?
[EDIT - see what James said above]

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
It looks like the mic actually has 2 outputs so I would go for 2 of these to split the 2 outputs into 4
https://www.thomann.co.uk/cordial_ey_03 ... ements.htm
4 of these (or choose an alternative length if these are too long or short)
https://www.thomann.co.uk/the_sssnake_k ... klinke.htm
and 4 of these
https://avpartsmaster.co.uk/cables-conn ... -converter
one on each of the phones.
I would add that this is just something that would appear to work on paper. I have no idea if there are any hidden gotchas that would prevent it from working in real life.

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
I have done a lot of live streaming on mobile phones over the years and have found the Zoom H5 to be pretty good for this, but then that has been with a single smartphone.
I wonder if you should treat them as separate devices and use individual devices for each phone ?

Re: Streaming from Mic to Smartphones
Mention was made of the MOTU M4? I have one and a smart phone. What I lack at the moment is a USB C to C cable to connect them together.
I do know the M4 will work "stand alone" as a mic pre amp if given 5 volts. I have run mine from a 3000mAhr USB power bank, whether it will 'talk' to a phone I don't know. I have found MOTU to be really helpful people so an email to them might bear fruit?
In the meantime I shall see if I can cobble that USB cable together somehow.
Dave.
