Nearly a month later ….

STUDIO IS BOOKED.

I’ll be returning to Pirate Studios on Friday, 16 January, to record the official demos of the completed pieces. :bouncy:

I would LOVE to have a fourth tune completed by then but I think that’s perhaps overly ambitious considering we’re on the threshold of Jamuary.

I do feel I wasted time playing round w the modular, though I know ‘wasted’ isn’t the correct term.

With a few days remaining to December, I may come up with something yet. I’m itching to come up with something in 6/8 for this project.

But first I must transcribe the’forest of mystery’ tune so I can play it on guitar!

Wow, how on earth do you manage to have more hours in a day than the rest of us Ben? ;)

So,yesterday, I once again ventured forth across Brooklyn to Pirate Studios to record the official songwriting demos for the three chiptunes I have thus far.

I brought one of my boutique amps with me — an EAST Studio 2 — and even though I ran the amp’s internal load output into the CAB, the difference was not subtle. The amp sounds gorgeous even when going direct. There’s a chewiness and thickness that feels totally different from solid state to me. There’s also a ton of harmonics. Like Budda amps before it, the Studio 2 is touch sensitive and the amount of gain you get is directly related to how hard you dig in. I ran chorus and echo through the fx loop and a Catalinbread Naga Viper as a boost in front of the amp.

I will have to listen back with fresh ears, but I think the results are good! A major lesson I learned yesterday is that my tunes are a little too twisty for me to just learn them in situ. :D I spent 4 of my 8 booked hours on Forest Of Mystery.

The remaining time was a mad dash across the finish line to record everything else. Fortunately, the other two tunes are much more practiced and came together quickly. UNfortunately, I couldn’t get the guitar to MIDI to work reliably. I abandoned it after an hour of trying to make it work.

I have a LOT of unpacking to do, I passed out at 11pm last night. The day was exhausting, 8 hours of standing and schlepping (I have views about recording performances whilst sitting down), trying to be swift whilst also engineering the session, and of course not settling for anything other than the best whole takes if I could manage it; I think I only punched in for one section of one tune, the rest were played head to tail as whole takes. I think that makes a huge difference in the performance. The entire thing was 11 straight hours, door to door.

Overall, a great day. I just hope it’s a keeper!

Thanks, Drew!

Just got all of the tracks for all 3 tunes into Logic. The guitar sounds superb, imo. This should be a relatively easy mix to pull down. I have everything in mono right now and most of the guitar parts are doubled but I've played them so many times that it sounds like one, massive guitar. Should sound great when panned left and right. The actual guitar tone sounds MASSIVE. I'm super happy with the guitar sound, tho I still would have preferred to mic an actual cabinet. The impulse response is surprisingly good, tho.

Thanks, Eddy! Now that it’s in a gig-able case, I want to get 20 minutes of music done and hit some EMOMs this spring/summer whilst I figure out the visual aspects with VEX and video shaders. I will also need some sort of reliable backup in case something happens to the modular…

Christened the Frankensynth tonight by working on the next section of the new chiptune. This is for documenting purposes so I don't forget the guitar part. :D Have to get the bass and drums finalized but it's a pretty chipper C|D|Bmin|Emin progression.

Chiptune no. 4 is in a state of basic completion, all that's remaining is to get the first draft of the drums and such blocked out, then I can work on getting the final details sorted.

PLAYING this song is another matter -- it's challenging, to say the least, and whilst my chops are returning in drips and drabs, this one is a real endurance test for my right wrist.

It's been fun seeing the tunes get progressively more complex as my chops are returning.

The next track will DEFINITELY be a town theme, tho! :D:D:D

The working demo came together pretty quick last night. The arrangement is now largely done and It's ready for transcription.

I'll be giving my wrists a break for a couple of days whilst I chase down a modular idea that popped in my head this morning ...

Delay in this project due to two factors: a) I injured my right wrist. Not sure if it's directly related to playing so much guitar so suddenly after so long a break, but it definitely exacerbates the issue. So I'm taking time to let it heal properly. I did some scale practice yesterday after a few days of not playing and there was no pain, but I'm not taking any chances. And b) Most of my spare time has been going into preparing for the gig I'm playing next month. I shall be returning to the chiptuning as soon as that's done and dusted!

Very sensible wrist assessment Ben - hope the pain dissipates at a rate of knots.
