Sound synthesis

Post by René Poggi »

Hi all,
Sorry if it is not the correct place for this post.
It is about sound synthesis.
In Tangerine Dream, "No Man's Land" there is a nice synthesiser sound,
I love it, it looks to be FM synthesis but not sure.
Y can hear on

Hey René, welcome to SOS.

Is it the same sound heard at eg 3:20 but higher...?

It has a nice de-tuned-ness about it...?

If it’s from the mid-1983 album (rather than a later re-recorded version) then it won’t be FM (well not as we would know it). The DX7 came out in November 1983 and Hyperborea was released in August 1983.

You can do FM with analogue synthesis (you are just modulating one oscillator with another, normally at audio frequencies) especially if linking modular synths together, but whether they went down that route to get that particular sound I have no idea.

Reliably fallible.

There's a breakdown here. If you tune in from 3.00 it's apparently a PPG.

Just to be picky, Yamaha released the GS1 in 1981 with 4 operator FM synthesis. Only about 100 were sold, admittedly, but there may well be some albums with sounds from it that pre-date the DX7.

Also the Synclavier could do FM and that was in the late 70s.

I thought the GS1 had FM, but it wasn’t mentioned in the couple of articles I read to check.

Hello All,

Thanks for all your replies.
The sound is coming at 2.49 and 4.12 and 7.06.

I try to do in Bitwig using FM.

Sorry for the late answer, I forgotten to tick " Notify me when a reply is posted "

Regards,
René
