Your top 5 500 series modules

Post by easyrider »

I sold some stuff and had a few quid to put towards a Neve R10 500 series rack.

What are your top 5 modules..?

Thanks !

Avedis Audio MA5 Preamp. my go to, always gets used, usually on lead vocal
RND 542 Tape emulator, again always on vocals
Great River Harrison EQ, smooth eq, just really nice in the tops where plug-ins can struggle
CAPI LC53A, wonderful EQ for guitars, boosting 400hz (where I would usually cut) sounds incredible. I dont know why, but it works
Maag EQ2 the air band, always on my drum buss to bring out sizzle in hats and cymbals.

Things I wouldn't buy (i.e. things I've sold)
Elysia Karacter, I have one, I keep trying...but it never does what I need.
Schultz EQ, characterful, but it just never did the business for me, there was always a better option
API 505 DI. Just sounded thin, and nowhere near as good as my ISA One.

Would love the RN tape emulator!
I’ve settled on:

Neve 2264 compressors, just awesome, couldn’t do without them!
SSL 611 compressors (4000E console I think) - does the job well
Rupert Neve 551 EQs for sweet top end
Trident EQs, functional, can dial in correction easily

Just recently got the Drawmer MQ-2 EQ but haven’t tried it on a mix yet, will do for the next project, but in tests love the saturation!

Cheers

The Drawmer MQ-2 EQ looks like a cool EQ

Let me know how you find it on the Mixbus

Which one are you talking about here? I’ve been curious about the tilt eq Roger Schult does, the W2393.

On the topic of tilt EQs I can definitely recommend the Ingram EQ52 which also features a pair of hi/lo cut filters with 6dB roll off. It’s surprising how little tilt some things need to readdress their balance. Also I haven’t seen it mentioned online but in my setup just switching the EQ52 in circuit whilst flat adds a tiny bit of sweetness to the top end. Like a really tiny bit but it’s welcome nevertheless.

No it was a pair of 2395. They’re nice, I wouldn’t say it was a bad product at all, it’s just that whenever I reached for it, it did its thing and it never hit the spot for me. I always ended up using something else that got me closer to what I wanted. After a while I stopped trying, then they just sat in the rack and hence I sold them…YMMV!
