So I always get a little confused when setting up proper gain levels when recording content for my video recordings, I think often this is due to it not just turning a knob on the audio interface, but having total mix playing a part and my video recording software OBS means these need to be taken into account. Another thing that throws me is when I try and raise the volume using the Audio interface it is not reflected in totalmix..
So what is the simplest fool proof way of doing this, that makes sense and doesn't cause me confusion

Re: Setting volume correctly using RME Babyface Pro
What do you mean by volume? Are we talking about recording levels or playback levels?

And TotalMix is essentially a signal router /mixer with faders, working with the equivalent of line-level signals in and out.
The interface input preamps are an entirely separate and independent facility, feeding into the recording router in TotalMix.
You can access the preamp controls associated with a hardware input in TotalMix by clicking on the relevant toolbox fly-out, but this is a kind of remote control function rather than an internal element.
Think of TotalMix as a line mixer with external mic preamps plugged in to it.
So, although preamp gain changes can be (remote) controlled from the TotalMix tools fly-out window, it's not a parameter which is normally on display in the standard TotalMix screen.

While this is true, in the Babyface’s case it’s much easier to control preamp gains, +48v etc in Totalmix- it’s fairly fiddly to do it on the Babyface itself.
To OP- any changes you make on the Babyface itself should be reflected in Totalmix. Usually the big wheel controls the playback volume, which only affects what reaches your speakers/headphones, and won’t affect anything in your other software (OBS etc)
Could you be more specific about the problem- what levels are problematic? Going into OBS, or coming out of the interface?
