Going to my first synth meetup on Friday!

Post by Ben Asaro »

There's a synth nerd meetup in Brooklyn this Friday at Resistor NYC; it's a kind of synth show-and-tell and jam session, and I'm planning on attending!

For this meetup I am putting together a small version of my Buchla sequencing sequencers -- I'm just waiting on the passive low pass gate I ordered to show up. I hope it arrives in time!

Here's a quick proof of concept video of the setup I will be bringing -- less the gate/vca, and polyphrase delay. I surprised myself with how quickly I was able to get it up and running.

This sounds great Ben. There's a lot of positive in meeting like-minded fellow synthesists/musos/sound engineers etc. I've had the pleasure of meeting many Sound On Sound forum folk in the UK and it's always an education and a pleasure in equal measure.

I'm sure you'll get along well, keep us posted!

Thx Eddy, I'm really looking forward to it.

Since deciding that I want to really start jamming with other synthesists/gigging, I rejoined New York Modular Society and it was like a shot of vitamins to my soul. Having a large local contingent means lots of meetups and gigs; even found a great local repair boffin to look into my Moog semi modulars!

Agreed - I'd also be interested in hearing in how you got on, and what sort of gear other NYC people brought along.

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.
Now a 'Senior'. Is that promotion?

FedEx totally messed up on this one, I had to pop a VCA into the skiff so it'll work for tomorrow night.

Did a quick test, though, and it sounds really good!

After WAY too many iterations (I really wish I knew about this meetup sooner), I finally have an iteration of the skiff that should work tonight:

The meet went great! Very welcoming atmosphere. Basically, the night is divided into 3 sections: first is set up/general social mixer. The second are 'performances'; this is for anyone that may be working on a piece for a set, to improvise/jam, or play something they wrote specifically for the meet. The third is show-and-tell going around the room where anyone that wants can tell about what they brought and play a little snippet.

The performances ranged from very experimental modular sounds to EDM on a range of equipment. One attendee played an improvised set using nothing but a Korg SQ-64 and Drumlogue

I got a lot of compliments for the sound of the Buchla, and one person who designs and builds his own synths wants to jam with me, so that was cool. Lots of banter before and after.

It was quite crowded, about 20 people crammed into a small NYC maker space with a huge wooden table in the middle.

For the next one I am planning on bringing either a Game Boy and doing a chiptune, or will bring a bigger case and do something Berlin School.

The other cool thing that came out of the night is booking my first synth gig! One of the moderators for New York Modular Society heard my bandcamp stuff and offered me a slot on a showcase at the end of April. I said yes, of course. :D

So now I am in full-on gig prep mode. For that show I'm planning on doing a full-on Berlin School set.
