It could be either. It sounds like a heavily processed (and probably pitched up) orchestral stab sample to me.

I'd agree with it being an orchestral stab - possibly stretched to make it have more sustain.

That is a classic stab, that was used a lot in the 1990's. I think it's this one:

It was a staple preset I think on the EMU Emulator and of course the Fairlight CME (It was a favourite of Trevor Horn - Featured on Owner of a Lonely Heart), but it was all over the 80s. I have a soft spot for it.

The Owner of a Lonely Heart stab is not this one, that was sampled from Funk Inc- “cool is back”, 1971. Stabs were extremely popular though. Both the CMI IIx and Emulator II factory library had a big collection of such sounds- around a dozen each :) And that is not counting the CMI stuff that was sampled for the EII!

Who sampled.com is a respectable resource for ascertaining sample sources.

there's an Alex Ball uTube on the Emulator, which has the lonley heart stabs as part of the standard library. Might not be original EMU though - who sampled who sampled who.

{Its the one with Ferris Bueller references }

Have you noticed that a few posts of the "what is this" type have appeared lately?
