Identifying a sound
Re: Identifying a sound
It could be either. It sounds like a heavily processed (and probably pitched up) orchestral stab sample to me.

I'd agree with it being an orchestral stab - possibly stretched to make it have more sustain.

That is a classic stab, that was used a lot in the 1990's. I think it's this one:

Re: Identifying a sound
It was a staple preset I think on the EMU Emulator and of course the Fairlight CME (It was a favourite of Trevor Horn - Featured on Owner of a Lonely Heart), but it was all over the 80s. I have a soft spot for it.
Re: Identifying a sound
The Owner of a Lonely Heart stab is not this one, that was sampled from Funk Inc- “cool is back”, 1971. Stabs were extremely popular though. Both the CMI IIx and Emulator II factory library had a big collection of such sounds- around a dozen each
And that is not counting the CMI stuff that was sampled for the EII!
Who sampled.com is a respectable resource for ascertaining sample sources.

Re: Identifying a sound
there's an Alex Ball uTube on the Emulator, which has the lonley heart stabs as part of the standard library. Might not be original EMU though - who sampled who sampled who.
