Elgato Stream Deck+ XL

Not the device I was hoping for, as a live performance controller, but certainly a potentially useful studio companion.

I have some measuring to do, but if it fits the same space as my older XL this may be in my future.

...Nope, too large for me. I'll have to pass.

Its smaller sibling is extremely cool though. I have some key mixer functions remoted out to it, DAW input level to mixer with metering, main stereo bus level with metering, and headphone bus level and metering, with a press on the encoders immediately setting volume to zero. All full duplex with the desk, so whatever gets wiggled or pressed is always in sync.

[Then I have a lot more buttons on the XL next to it for a full set of bus monitoring toggles with metering plus full duplex Reaper transport controls plus Windows media controls as well. Along with Spotify integration to show currently playing artist, album and track, etc. ]

Nobody *needs* one (or more) of these things. But they are terrifically ergonomic, especially with Bitfocus as well as the StreamDeck software. This is because with Bitfocus they can properly be configured to be full duplex. This makes a big difference to things that can be controlled in two places, because things never get out of sync.

Too few buttons for me. The problem is that Elgato seems to gone from under-specced to over-specced in a single bound.

It looks very, very, interesting.

I already have a 6 and a 15 button version. The 15 button version I use live hooked up to Cantabile (playback and recording), my XR-18 mixer, QLC+ (which runs the lights) and to activate the tuner on my Helix.

I think that I could do some real damage if I had rotary controls :)

Have you seen the new small Yamaha CC1 controller with a built-in little Streamdeck? Being Yamaha, it supposedly has very tight integration with Steinberg software, which could suit you?

Not a lot of buttons though, so would need to be used alongside another one I gues, but it does give you a fader and transport controls etc.

Ooh... I'd be interested in QLC+ with a stream deck - particularly as I think QLC+ will run on a Raspberry Pi. this might be the lighting controller solution I need for our church.

I've been looking at these and they do look a very useful bit of kit. I'm on an eternal quest to find the 'perfect' controller - 16 faders, lots of assignable buttons and at least 8 knobs. Presently I am using 3 controllers to do that.

Actually, I've come around to becoming more dependent on the QWERTY keyboard and the keyboard commands(Cubase), but the Elgato looks very tempting

That being said I keep asking myself, "Why not go the whole distance, buy a digital mixer, many of which double up a controller, and I've got an interface too?"

I think Ajay M would strongly support that suggestion. Might be worth dropping a PM to have a chat. ;)

Yes, and I do like the look of it as a studio tool, though it's woefully short of buttons compared to my Stream Deck XL. Even to select my 8 Visibility Configurations would require paging around - and by that time it's easier to use the mouse. As you say, I'd have to keep both.

As a live performance aid the Yamaha is a bit large and oddly shaped to sit on my stage keyboard. And again it's short on buttons. I currently use a 15-button Stream Deck, neatly velcro-ed to my keyboard which does a good job. I could just do with a few more buttons at the least, and a small display strip and knobs at best.

So for me it's not about a large all-singing device, just something neatly between the too limited SD+ and the far too big SD+XL. The SD Goldilocks?
