RCF 910

Post by S2 »

Hi all. Currently in two bands, a three piece (occ a sax as well) which is electric drum kit and a four piece - mostly acoustic drum kit. I have a pair of RCF 312 tops and a studio spares 15 inch sub.

I like the tops and will still keep them as spares but they are pretty heavy (around 20kg each) and the sub is 38kg. All three heavy and very bulky and with my bass rig and lights means that I struggle on gigs in the ULEZ as I need to take the smaller car.

I’ve been thinking of updating for a while and initially thought of a column PA (x2) however I’ve moved away from that as the ones I would have EV50? are out of my budget.

So I’ve listened to a pair of RCF 910 and I have to say they sounded pretty good to my ears. In fact very good - way above my 312s. I was going to get the RCF 702 sub to go with them which would be a smaller lighter system in total and would sound good. We play pubs and smaller clubs so assuming they are as loud or louder than the setup I have (on paper they are louder) then they should be fine.

Anyone use these and could comment? Would the 10s on top with a 12 inch sub be ok? Would struggle to afford two subs.

I like RCF stuff in general - simple but quality. I did look at ALTO stuff - the TS410 plus a sub which is a lot less but I haven’t heard them and I’m not sure of the reliability. Yamaha DXR adds a fair amount more into the price. RCF seem to offer a good price/performance ratio.

RCF I’m also on my second pair and my dad’s rcf made Mackies are still working perfect after 20 years.

They are top quality reliable speakers. The 9 series are superb get them.

Multiple subs are just a good way to introduce bass reinforcement and cancellation nodes (apart from those intrinsic to the venue).

RCF make good kit, those early SM450s made by RCF sounded much nicer than the later versions. 10" drivers usually sound better than 12"s in the vocal range. Alto's sound decent but you usually get what you pay for (I can't comment on reliability as I haven't used any since the TS1xx range which weren't). Yamaha's are very nice but even with a 7 year warrantee reliability is not assured as evidenced by the dead DXR10 in my garage. I haven't heard them but I'd expect you will be well served by the 910s.

Still mourning the loss of my 'Jedi Poster" status :)

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

The Altos I've had have been reliable, and powerful.

That said, they don't touch the RCF for sound quality, and if you can afford the RCF, you're getting a much better speaker that you'll have to EQ less to get what you need out of it.

Thanks all. I will give the Altos a listen - I think they have some in Guitar Guitar.

Did listen to the Altos, not bad but I was so impressed with the RCF 910s, I ordered them instead. And the 702 sub. Arrived last Saturday and I have to say the sound is awesome! Really impressive vocal sound. Got eight gigs between now and the end of the year to put them to the test.

Not surprised with the assessment! Altos are good for the money, but RCF, as you've discovered, are better!
