about to invest in for new monitoring. as i ONLY ever record rock/guitar music I need the low end and don't want to spend more than 800 in total
what would be best out of getting the smaller genelecs with the 5040 sub giving down to around 20hz or getting the better spec 8030's (with no sub as no budget!!)
....both would end up around the same price in total but.....hmmmm....
also...i've never really mixed using a sub so are they even a good idea for this purpose..?
thanks
Genelec 6010's with sub OR just Genelec 8030

Why Genelecs?? Is that something you particularly like about them or is it a bit of a *me to* scenario?
Is your room treated at all? If not chucking anything willy nilly in there is not necessarily going to improve the situation at all. in fact, it might even make things worse...
If you cant treat the room at all, you might well be better off using headphones for critical listening. Something along the lines of the AKG 701s and a decent headphone amp... with a small pair of something like, Fostex PM4s as an open air listening reference...
If you can treat the room.... The Blue Sky Media and spend the rest on treatment would be my recommendation. The best sub woofer combo, under a grand, so far...

Hello, try and get a retailer to set up a demo for you of the two systems - the 6010+5040 combo sounds quite different to the 8030s and you might find one suits your needs better than the other...
