UAD have finally killed the archaic DSP faff. Sell the cards before they are worth zero.

Sage advice, I think that is going to be number 1 on my list of chores for today, after I've had a cuppa and a moan on here

Sorry guys this is not quite right. If you want to keep the UADx perpetual license, you got because you had the DSP version, you HAVE to have at least 1 HW device registered in your UA account with your DSP plugins registered to that, unless you pay for the Spark subscription. If you sell all your cards/interfaces you lose the perpetual licence. For example, I have a Quad USB, duo and solo. when UA finally bring out the 480L and Distressor native I will sell the Duo and Quad but will have to retain the solo to keep the perpetual native licenses. Annoying but there you go

I don't think this is quite right either.

My understanding is:-

You can't *buy* DSP plugins without an active DSP device in your account, for sure.

If you already have DSP plugin licenses, and you sell/transfer your DSP hardware (*without plugins*) you retain the plugin licenses (but can't use the DSP plugins, of course). And you can continue to use the native plugins, because if you own a DSP plugin and got a free native license (or if you bought a native plugin), you get an iLok license deposited into your iLok account, which is unrelated to the DSP hardware.

And if you later get a new DSP device, your DSP plugins can run on that once it's been registered to your account.

You also used to be able to sell your DSP device *with* all plugin licenses included in the sale, in which case you lose the licenses from your own account. I don't know whether this is still an option without checking UA support, especially as the native licenses now cloud that issue (pun intended!)

(I just checked, and this is still an option - sell/transfer a card with, or without, all plugins.)

And if you are doing this - selling a card *with all your plugins* - you have to deactivate your iLok licenses *before* requesting the transfer of the DSP hardware, so UA can reclaim those iLok assets. So you don't get to keep those native licenses, which is to be expected.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

Most importantly, UAD have not currently killed DSP, since only a relatively small number of their plug-ins are currently available in native form. It’s quite possible that some of them will never be native and even if they are, it may well take a few years until all are. With the current Apollo interfaces, DSP will always be necessary to record through UAD plug-ins. Whether or not this changes in future remains to be seen of course.
