I think it was this one that Dave linked to before, without the surround sound feature.

My vote too. I'd have full confidence it will work as perfectly after the 150th gig as the fifth gig. I wouldn't feel that way about the teknet product... or anything with minijack sockets.

But why replace one external box (a 2i2) with another one doing just the same thing for £255+?

It might answer someone else's question, but it doesn't help the OP.

I agree it's semi duplication... but the Radial is ruggedised in a way the 2i2 isn't and will survive fast and heavy-handed rigging/de-rigging with standard XLR cables which seemed to be a requirement.

One other alternative would be a good line/headphone DAC, as has been suggested.
I don't know the market well, but I use the superb Roland UA-M10 here. They are small, rugged, and sound excellent, but are sadly discontinued.
It can run headphones or line-level, and has a balanced output option (which would require 3.5mm to XLR cables).

A little-known gem IMO, I found mine on clearance and bought two immediately. I believe they can still be found for about $200. Mac support goes up to Mojave only, according to the website.
