Synth lead - jack2jak or jak2xlr??

Just wondering which is better to use when connecting to a desk from a synth with line out. I thought if i connected a jack to xlr male to the desk it would distort. I switched to mic level, i know that the synth is line level out but it doesn't distort, it is very hot alright, i was wondering if that is in any way bad for the desk? I know this is a probably straightforward issue but it's something which i felt i'd ask anyway... Thanks, Paul
