Well, I can't compare it to the A&H board, but I had the 32-channel Topaz Project 8 (8 bus) board for several years, and I loved it. The only reason I got rid of it was that my new studio could not fit it. I tried everything I could think of to get it to fit, including sideways, but to no avail. It was a sad day when I saw my Topaz go.

I loved the board, and got some GREAT recordings out of it over the years.

Studio Systems are the experts on Soundtracs desks. Get in touch with Tim, he's very approachable and should be able to tell you plenty about the Topaz.

What you need to remember here is that you are comparing an old mixer with one that is current production (A&H) and what was regarded as one of the best `budget` mixers Soundcraft have made in a long time.
And the S/C was a LOT more money.
Topazes get good press moslty - I was a little unsure of the EU and the way the Auxes worked myself, which is why I spent my £400 on an A&H GS3V

I would say £500 is probably a bit steep unless you are buying from Tim.

These desks can go a bit cheaper than that on ebay.

I took advice from Tim and went for a Soundtracs Solo desk instead of a Topaz (Solo build quality is apparently a little bit better).

I got it (24 channel) for something like £350 a couple of years back.

Cheers
