JM Jarre and Vince Clarke

For enthusiasts of synths, pianos, organs or keyboard instruments of any sort.

JM Jarre and Vince Clarke

Post by Dave B »

Noticed this the other day and have just checked it out. There's a video podcast with Jarre and each of his collaborators for his new album with VC representing the sound of electronic music in the 80s. Sound choice I reckon ;)

You've got to love someone who starts his interview with "Wow - I'd never met anyone that famous before ... " in complete wide eyed awe ...

And the bits of track sounded good as well. As do some of the others - definitely collaborations and not just remixes. Seems we should have a good album out soon

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.
Now a 'Senior'. Is that promotion?

Great interview. Also interesting how JMJ has become more laid-back than in his early years.

Electronica : JmJs upcoming album

JmJ is representing Major Electronic Music Trends of last 40-45 years.
Collaborating with 16 musicians of those trends.

Three years in the making, fitting himself around the different musicians time frames,
visiting every artist personally.

Therefore each collaboration track is meant to sound of that era.

Pete Townsend, Edgar Froese, John Carpenter,
Gary Numan, Boris Blank, Vince Clarke,
Massive Attack, Air, Moby,
Armin Van Buren, M83, Gessafelstein.

There maybe POSSIBLY with

Chemical Brothers or Underworld or Prodigy to represent Big Beat.
Daft Punk, Moroder.

There should have been Roni Size as Roni is a fan of JmJ.

Ooh - thanks to Amazon delivering early, I'm now listening to this before the release date (tomorrow). Just started so will give an overall opinion later.

Approaching 70 (67) JmJ could do an album about Pink Fairies
I'd be alright with that ... not that my opinion matters ... matters nowt.

Hipster album from a 20something made for the mobile generation.
Pretty alright for an ole duffer.

Tribute to Edgar Froese : Zero Gravity brought a tear.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L7MHhLYecT0.
Edgar & JmJ a whole album .... would been a Dream.
Story https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N93ju_saY7oAsg

Part 2 spring 2016 prolly more relaxed :
Gorgio Moroder, Hans Zimmer, DavidLynch, The Orb, Portishead.

I think the diverseness of artists on both albums (Part 1&2)
Gives an indication of where JmJ stands ....
different from what the press would have people believe

( I love JmJ to bits, pretty much the reason I got into wanting to make music).

It's not his usual fare - but in some ways it is. You can definitely hear that it's him - some of the sound choices, some of the melodies, they are just him. But it looks like he's been careful with his choice of partners and found people who can bring out their personality as well. I love the single - Little Boots and JMJ are an odd combination but it does work rather nicely.

Just like the old days though, he's printed a list of the gear used on the album - I'll put a photo up somewhere. Note : I _had_ to take a photo so that I could enlarge it and read the writing. Himself isn't the only one getting on a bit ... ;)

I can now afford a few of JmJ's instruments ... plugins

I remember the days pouring over the album instrument lists
Trying to figure out what they looked like.

I was a fan of Jarre's music up until the early nineties. I've heard all his albums since, but this is the first that I've really liked again in over 20 years - not all of it, mainly the pieces with F**k Buttons, Vince Clarke and John Carpenter.

From SoS article

“I really wanted to have this almost initiation journey, where I go and visit people,”
“ I mean electronic musicians, you know, we are quite isolated. ”
“ I’ve been really moved by the fact that everybody said yes.”

"I’ve prepared quite advanced demos for every collaborator."
“What could it be working with Vince Clarke,
or what could it be working with Massive Attack?
Then trying to go musically to establish a kind of bridge.
Writing something in their direction.”

The thing I take away from this project is how much admiration respect JmJ has towards every artist on this album :
from newer Boyz Noyz, Gessafelstein to established Edgar Froese, Laurie Anderson.

As well as JmJs humbleness to meet them in their studio with a demo in their style.

(I'd be moved if JmJ visited me with a demo in my style).

Course JmJ doesn't see it as humbleness, he is just being himself .
This is why he is The Dude.

:::
I appreciate this now as much as I was inspired as a kid.

In this interview he makes some odd claims

http://www.konbini.com/en/entertainment-2/jean-michel-jarre-interview/

That’s one of the things that I enjoyed the most with the Electronica project: remembering that electronic music has nothing to do with the United States. It’s not related to jazz, blues, rock, it comes from continental Europe.

It has nothing to do with English-speaking countries, it was born in Germany with Stockhausen and in France with Pierre Schaefer, then with the Germans on one side, or me. We each come with our own particularities and we have held this legacy: these long instrumentals are the legacy of music tied with technology.

I find this statement very odd. He seems to have completely overlooked American artists such as Raymond Scott, Wendy Carlos and the various synth pioneers - Moog, Oberheim, Smith, Pearlman, among others. And his comment about English-speaking countries would include the UK, so that is the BBC Radiophonic workshop, including Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram ignored along with Eno and a whole raft of others.

I'm sure I've heard him comment favourably on the Radiophonic Workshop in general and DD's Dr Who theme in particular. I suspect that his comments deal with artists more in the mainstream bringing new artificial sounds to the public. He has also commented that in the early days, he was definitely 'an ARP guy' rather than a Moog head.

There's a video on youtube done my FM and he is soooo sweet in that - constantly cleaning his specs, fumbling with the mouse and hunting for tracks in Live .. he just comes across as so genuine and enthusiastic. He's back on my (small) list of people I'd love to have a cup of tea and a quiet natter with

I'm hoping it has been taken out of context. Interviews don't exactly tell the whole story.

The trouble with interviews is that a skilled interviewer can easily get an unskilled interview-ee to claim black is white. :frown:
