When my friend said he had a Shruti, I thought he'd picked up one of those synths. But, no, it's one of these, which the Shruthi must be named after. Never heard of it before.

There are four rotary dials which can uncover one of three holes to dial up a chord, and a couple of bellows you can operate to create a drone while you noodle away.

Now that looks like real fun 8-)

I think Olivier Gillet (who designed the Shruthi synth) is heavily inspired by Indian music, which probably explains the name connection.
