Live looper for iOS

Post by Sam Spoons »

I'm looking for a looper to use on my iPhone/iPad for practicing. I record and loop a rhythm track and practice lead playing over it. Ideally it would have AirTurn for start and stop and bluetooth playback capability. Simplicity would be a bonus as I don't need more than one track (I could even live without a save feature as I also need to practice my rhythm playing so re-recording a track every time is fine).

I know I can do this in GB or Auria but it lacks the immediacy of a looper. I could take a looper pedal but then I have to get it out, plug it in and so on, with something iPhone based I could simply record the track via the mic and replay throughout my bluetooth speaker.

Loopy is the app I've gone for and, so far, it seems like it might do the job. For anybody who might want to do similar I've posted in the Guitar Technology forum (because I thought it might be more applicable) and I'll make a progress report later.

Thanks Sam - I'm interested in how you get on with this, as I was about to investigate some sort of looper for my wife's lever harp noodling

Progress is being made. I went for Loopy and managed to sort the Airturn Pad to control the app in a very similar manner to the pedals on my TC Ditto X2. The left pedal sends an <up> key press which I have configured to start recording/toggle playback and the right button sends <down> which I've set to "toggle mute and restart". This means I can start a loop while playing the guitar with the left pedal and a second press ends the loop and starts playback. The right pedal stops the loop and a second press restarts the loop from the beginning (this is slightly hit and miss for some reason). Sufficient for my needs.

I haven't yet worked out how to get playback via bluetooth but, while that would be nice (and, most likely available when iOS10 arrives) I can put up with a single cable from the iPhone to my amp for now.

The other issue I have had is that my Selmer Style is overdriving the mic preamp, even with the gain at minimum (you can only adjust the gain while there is a wired connection between the instrument and the iPhone, it doesn't work when using the mic for some reason. As a workaround I plugged it in and reduced the gain then reverted to using the mic).

The other issue is the bluetooth connection between the Airturn and the iPhone is sometimes a bit flakey (even though it works faultlessly with my iPad and 'My Lyric Book').

Let me know if you go for it and I'll post details of how I've got Loopy set up to work with the Airturn pedal (or if you find a simple looper that works, Loopy is good but more complex than I really need...... OTOH at only £3.99.......).
