Audient id14: awesome but...
Hi. For Xmas I was lucky to receive one of these from my most excellent Mrs. I'm new to the Audient id14 and so far very impressed. One thing I'm having problems with is the faders in the mixer app. They don't seem to do anything to the gain level, just adjust the volume going to the speakers, with the result that the guitar signal through the DI is going into my DAW really hot. I've obviously missed something but I just can't see what it is! Does anyone have one of these who can help me out? Thanks.

Use the gain knobs on the hardware to set your gain levels.
Are you plugging your guitar straight into the the DI input on the iD14
or are you using a separate DI and plugging that into the Audient's mic input?

Going straight into the DI on the front of the unit. There doesn't seem to be a gain knob for the DI: just the 2 mic pre's on the back. This is how Audient describe how to do it

If it's anything like the ID22, the gain pot for mic/line 1 controls the DI input if you've plugged into it.

OK thanks. I'll have another run at it tomorrow.

Actually it's channel 2 on the iD22 that controls the DI input
Re: Audient id14: awesome but...
The manual gives the gain range of the instrument input as 0 to 66dB (which seems a crazily high level for guitar to me?) . So if there is a range there must be a control?
The input impedance is given as >500k (why not 1 meg? ) and so if the AI is "overhot" for guitar an easy 6dB pad could be made with a 560k resistor in a jack plug at the AI end.
The manual states that a "discrete FET input is used to give a mild degree of distortion".
Not keen on that. Personally I would prefer a totally clean DI input and let the punter decide the "attitude" with a pedal or software.
Dave.

Cheers Dan.
I'm looking forward to my left ear working properly again when this cold finally goes away!

My left ear is knackered at the moment too! Partial deafness and mad tinnitus. Well hacked off.

Turns out the unit is faulty. Audient Help Desk most helpful. Back to Thomann it goes for replacement

Hi sorry for digging out this old post.
I have the exact same "issue" that you had and frankly I'm not sure whether it is an actual defect or if it's supposed to overdrive that way.
Did you ever get a replacement? And was your first unit actually broken in the first place?

The DI input runs through the Channel 1 mic preamp, so shares the same gain range (0-56dB with an optional +10dB boost). This is fairly common practice.

Fair enough, but it lends a pretty subtle degree of flattering musicality that appeals to many.
