Guitar Cable - Silent Jack

I was off work this week and decided to make some new guitar leads.

I bought Sommer Spirit Guitar Cable and some Neutrik jacks from Studiospares. I thought I'd give the Neutrik NP2X-AU silent jack a go and put a Neutrik NP2X mono jack at the other end.

Wow! The silent jack is a tremendous invention - I can't recommend this highly enough. The cable is completely silent when unplugged from the guitar - no interference picked up at all. Most obvious when using a tube amp. I had to check that the amp was still on! It also solders very easily.

The Sommer Spirit Guitar Cable is also great at twice the price. It has no significant handling noise. All in all, a great combination!

Having recently returned to a 2 guitar live set up I was thinking about giving the silent jack a try.

Great invention. I made a couple of leads with the silent plug.

No more annoying 'pop' when changing guitars and I am genuinely amazed at how quiet the amp is when no guitar is plugged in.

They're bloody brilliant — I used to have one, until it disappeared after a gig... Really useful for open-mic type nights, where you can just leave the cable dangling over the mic stand and not have to worry about muting/unmuting as people plug/unplug.

I've used the Neutrik silent jacks for several years, and they are really useful.

However, I've had a few total failures where the switch is not operated when the sleeve has been pushed up. In fact these are the only Neutrik failures I've had since I first used their connectors more than 25 years ago.

Also, I have one awkward guitarist who always manages to activate the jack before it is completely inserted in the guitar.

But in general, they're great.

All my guitar cables now have a Neutrik Silent Jack one end, standard Neutrik at the other and Van Damme cable in the middle. Great cables. I've bought them as presents for guitar plating mates as well.
