SOS Technical Glossary
SOS Technical Glossary
I am pleased to report that the SOS Technical Glossary has been found in the back of a cupboard, dusted off, and slotted back into the online archives.
https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advi ... ical-terms
or
https://www.soundonsound.com/glossary
You can find it by typing Glossary into the search engine, and its terms should come up in search results.
There are plans to develop this resource substantially in the future, too... but in the meantime, we welcome any suggestions for other terms to be added.

In my world, things get less strange when I read the manual...

In my defence I was unsupervised at the time.

Re: SOS Technical Glossary
Suggestion : Given that we are trying to use it correctly these days, Polarity could do with an entry. And possibly a 'see Polarity' addition to Phase.

I've added a few new entries to the technical glossary today, and I've a few more still to come...

Re: SOS Technical Glossary

Have already spent 15 minutes browsing and learned a few new things

Please do add "Updated August 2017" to the posting date 'Published May 2003', so people who find it other than from this thread know it isn't stale content.
My ambition: To one day have enough experience to answer technical questions on the SOS forums, as well as asking them

Fair point. I just allocated it to the currently oldest past issue, whilst we develop a different way to offer the Glossary (all articles have to have a month/year issue publication date associated with them). I've changed it to the latest issue, so it now says September.

We've also added a GLOSSARY button on the grey secondary navigation menu on the home page, which everyone should bookmark, of course.

That's going to be very useful, thanks.

Cubase, guitars.
Re: SOS Technical Glossary
I wonder if there's some clever way of making it so that the first time a word that's in the glossary gets mentioned in an online article, it can be hovered over to show the glossary definition...?

You want the earth Chris.

There will be ways to achieve it, and there are sites who use such linking practices to promote related advertising (personally, I avoid such articles like the plague) -- they usually show as dotted underlined words.

Don't know if I'm surprised, sad or chuffed there isn't a 'mashedmitten - Wanker' entry under M.

If you're claiming that as your main technical expertise then this is probably not the glossary that you'll be appearing in.

Belatedly and hurried (as I just noticed this interesting post) here are some comments...
- Algorithm
First definition is not correct.
An algorthm is a sequence of instructions describing how to perform a task, often implemented in a computer language and compiled into a computer program. For example Quicksort is an algorithm for sorting data. - Computer
I think it is much more than the definition provided. - Data Reduction
The text describes compression (of data) rather than any other data reduction techniques. So perhaps move it to a compression (data) entry. - File
A container for stored digital data that usually has a meaningful name which it can be accessed by. ... - Initialize
I don't think so, this could just return a device to a startup state with new settings that were not a factory default. - K
should be lower case - MB
10- (SI units) or 2-based depending on context, MiB is a more recent tern to help disambiguate this in computing contexts. - Moving Coil
Also the moving coil phono cartridge. - Near Field
Also used to describe the distance from a sound source or a device to be used at that position (for example a microphone) - Nyquist Theorem]
Why concentrate on aliasing, isn't the point that this frequency is what is required to reproduce the original signal? - Reverberation Time
Add a definition for this.
Re: SOS Technical Glossary
Thanks -- useful feedback. I'll take a look at incorporating these ideas tomorrow.

Brilliant.
Under Audio Interface perhaps an update for Thunderbolt, AVB and Dante protocols is warranted?
