DIY mastering made easy

Post by gingertimmins »

Hi guys,
I'm reading the article in this months mag and I'm interested in giving it a bash. I'm not in a position to buy any software at the moment and I'm wondering if ReaFir included with reaper would do the trick. It can build noise profiles and be used as a surgical eq (according to the site).
Is this a suitable tool for the job?

Cheers

Hi Ginger

I have never used ReaFir so couldn't tell you buddy. Maybe one of the boys here could help out?

What is your main DAW?

Thanks for the reply zukan!
So I had a dabble with it comparing the article as best as I could with reafir. I'm not sure if what I did was exactly what the article intended but I did end up with some very satisfactory results which improved the tonal balance of the track so happy days there!
My main daw is cubase elements 9 (having downgraded from cubase 5 as it wasn't running well since moving to windows 10 and nowadays I don't need anything more than a basic toolset) and I'm using a couple of reaplugs in cubase.

I found a free tilt eq which is something that Reafir lacked and I'm getting decent results so I think I have everything I need.

Great article by the way, makes me want to revisit the mixing to pink noise article which I believe you wrote?

Anyways, nice one!

Great, glad it helped.

Doesn't Cubase Elements 9 have Curve EQ?

Not 100% sure but I doubt it — Elements has only 40 FX plug-ins compared with Pro's 90, and Steinberg obv pay a licensing fee to Voxengo for Curve EQ, so would make sense to make that one of the 'added value' features for the full fat version.

Apparently there is a lot of confusion about whether Curve EQ is supplied with any of the Elements versions. However, there is this:

Something wrong with the link Zuke as I get a 404 error.

This should work. https://www.steinberg.net/fileadmin/fil ... base_9.pdf

Reliably fallible.

According to the plugins manual for Cubase Pro 9, only Cubase Pro and Nuendo have CurveEQ

Fixed the link for you

That PDF confirms that Curve EQ is, as I suspected, bundled with the full-fat version of Cubase only. (It's $79.95 direct from Voxengo if you wish to add it to other versions.)
