PA/Monitor setup using Soundcraft sig 12

Post by ksburrus »

I am a novice. Sorry for the dumb question. I have the Soundcraft sig 12 mixer and some powered speakers for mains. We have a gig scheduled and I need to hook up some powered monitors. The sig 12 user manual is not very well written in my opinion and I can't figure how to do it. I have several questions:

Can I use 1/4 guitar cords to connect?
Do I connect into the AUX 1 and AUX 2 1/4 inch jacks?
If the answers to the 1st 2 questions ares "yes"... what else do I need to do on the board to get sound? Keep in mind that the only thing running through the board will be vocals.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yes, you can use guitar cables to connect the speakers as long as they have 1/4" jack inputs available (depending on the powered monitors, and in most cases, TRS rather than TS cables would be better and some will only have XLR inputs). Go from the aux 1 output to the line input on the first powered monitor. Set the aux "pre/post" button to pre. You can do the same for a second monitor. If you have more than two you can (usually) daisy-chain them from the other monitors. It is possible, if you don't need any fx, use the third aux for a third monitor mix but you'll most likely be using this for the built in fx so it should be set to "post".

Then, in the way you would use the faders to mix the FOH and the master fader to control the overall PA volume, use the aux knob on each channel to build the mix you need in each powered monitor.

Still mourning the loss of my 'Jedi Poster" status :)

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

Yes you can, although the aux outputs are TRS balanced outputs, and if the powered monitors have balanced TRS inputs, then you'd be better off using TRS ('stereo') jack cables cables rather than TS guitar cables.

All you'll need to do is set up each mic channel so that it's sending an output on it's Aux 1 and 2 sends to the two Aux channels, then set the Aux 1 and 2 master outputs to set the overall monitor levels.

If there's a FOH mixing person, it's normally best to set the powered monitor level quite high an do the volume level setting from the desk, so that if there's any monitor induced feedback, they can quickly pull the levels down.

The FX return control has pots to determine how much of the internal Aux 3/internal FX (typically reverb) is sent to Aux 1 and 2, i.e. how much of the FX effect is sent to the monitors.

Reliably fallible.

...Plus what Sam said about the pre/post switches.
