Has anyone succesfully used a 10 metre Firewire cable

According to the SOS article from some time ago the max recommended length for Firewire cables is 4.5m. I wonder has anyone used a 10 metre cable . . there are a couple on ebay, so maybe it is possible. In the same article it recommended max length of USB to be 5m, and i have used 10 metre, so maybe longer the length is possible with Firewire

Thankfully such information doesn't get outdated - as I said there " the maximum recommended lengths for Firewire digital cables is 4.5 metres" so you can certainly try a longer one.

There are just no guarantees that this will work reliably, although it may be fine in your application - fingers crossed!

We used to run a large format printer on a fifteen meter FW cable.

For something more fussy than a printer, you might want to use a fW hub with two 5m cables

FWIIW I found my KA6 would work fine on two 5mtr USB 2.0 cables with one PC but with only ONE of the two with another PC, things can get sticky at limits.

Not a 10m cable, but a this extender works near-flawlessly on my RME fireface 800. I saw near flawlessly as I remember having to reset it a couple of times. But mostly, a peach.

Careful as sometimes running shorter than 10m will make it less reliable. Stick within the guidelines. Cat5e cable is cheap if you ever decide to run it longer

yes Martin that was the article i read. i think i'll just have to give it a go, and see what happens. I think that CATS extender is a bit of overkill for what i want

Lindy used to do 5, 7.5 and 10m variants.... they might still for all i know.... suffice to say i have several, and they still work, a decade after i bought them.

used them in many many installs, never a single problem with them, except when abused by putting heavy furniture edges on them.... and even then, survived better than most....

I have not, but if I needed a 10m Firewire cable, I would not trust an average computer retail cable; instead I would go straight to Granite Digital for one. I've been using their Firewire cables for 20 years and I have maybe 2 dozen of them. They're thick and have ferrite cores on both ends. Looks like they have a 10m (32 foot) length in both Firewire 400 and 800 formats:
