Bench PSU

Post by Sam Spoons »

Here’s a question for you old solder jockies. I’ve decided I need a bench power supply, I don’t want to spend too much say up to £60 or so. Am I better to buy a new cheapish one or an old Wier or similar?

Since they all look the same, have the same spec and probably come out of the same factory, I've ordered this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADJUSTABLE-LED-REGULATED-VARIABLE-DC-POWER-SUPPLY-30V-5A-LAB-CE-BENCH-DESK-UK/352518705531?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648. If it proves unsatisfactory I can always return it. It will only get light use, first job to see at what voltage the RC-3 Looper bugs out......

I've got an old Weir Minireg which seems OK for most things although it needs a good going over with switch cleaner. I've also used something that looks very similar to the supply that you've bought in my old job and it seemed fine.

I realise it's a little more than your budget, but I use this Tenma 72-8690 from CPC.

It's a dual supply that runs up to 32VDC and 3 amps per output, which makes it more than enough for a wide range of analogue audio work. And it can be used as two independent supplies, or as a +/- dual-rail supply

Thanks Hugh, I'll see how the cheapo one turns out and consider one of the Tenma ones later. I did consider a dual rail supply but decidedI probably would not need one ion the foreseeable future (watch me proved wrong almost immediately :headbang: ).

And thanks James, in the end I decided on new to avoid any dodgy switch/pot issues and to have the opportunity to return if it turns out to be poor.

Too out of touch to be helpful but I do wonder why they Photoshop the display in the listing?

I think I got my supply from Maplin but it is consigned to a cupboard along with an old Farnell (high current) supply I sometimes used to 'light up' pencil 'leads' to amuse the kids...
