There are no good labels or bad labels. There are only good label deals and bad label deals.

You might pick up some ideas from this 10-part series SOS ran in 2017.

Hi Adam,

These days you don’t have to use a label to release your music and be successful. You can just sign up with a distributor such as CD Baby or Distrokid who will send your music to the online stores. You would have to do your own promotion and administration, but you would have complete freedom about what music you produce and when.

2nd this man. With so much information on the web about how you can market your music & how to release stuff, you don't need a label anymore.

If you're willing to learn music marketing properly, then I'd cut the label out. I've only had bad experiences with labels & they take a lot of your revenue (which is already peanuts)!

I'm not saying you'll have the same experience, but I think it's worth looking at self-releasing rather than signing away all your rights to music you spent ages working on.

The Republic is good for its greatest riches, so almost everyone else is treated like garbage. They ruined the career of Jessie J with bad decisions and no marketing, and now she's stuck with the music that she knows they won't help.

At first read this comes across as unqualified opinion more than anything else. Can you cite some sources to back those assertions up?

Jessie J is enjoying massive success having made a remarkably shrewd decision to focus on the Asian market. She's one of the biggest stars in China.

In the west we pay little or no attention to the Asian music scene. But the audiences for J Pop and K Pop dwarf those of even the biggest western stars.

Not necessarily, if you have a poor deal but massive sales then that could be better than poor sales with higher income per sale.

The best label depends on your situation. If you have the money and time to invest in your own marketing and connections-building, probably no label at all is best.

If you don't, the best label is any label that has them, wants to invest in you and your music and doesn't appropriate 90% of the profits in case of success.

All considered, the second requirement is the hardest.

This is fantastic, something I have been wondering about for a little while is how to get music out there for use in film/TV and had no idea what to even search for in Google.

Thanks for posting

Create good content then work your butt off building a local following. There are no shortcuts here, you have to put the groundwork in to show any potential managers that it's worth their time - both in terms of your commitment and in terms of the popularity of the product.
