epic soundtrack drum and bass

Post by onesecondglance »

i'd love some constructive feedback on this track:

element one / element two

it is intended to be a fairly grandiose slab of action-movie-soundtrack-meets-drum-and-bass-in-a-dark-alley-with-violence-ensuing sorta thing. doesn't take itself too seriously, but should still be able to make you bang your head / move your bum / whatever it is the kids do these days. :D

could people particularly focus on the balance of the mix, and the overall EQ?

thanks in advance!

Bit of a monsta 12 smeg download to expect much response....

Still - you caught me on a beer/oatcake break so.....

Listened to the 1st 4 mins ish and I'd bring the snare/clap down somewhat. Seems otherwise ok, but I'd question how hip the drum'n'bass/trancy synth thing is these days for soundtrax etc.

yeah - thought i should have mentioned this is essentially two songs rammed together (hence the title). gets more orchestral towards the middle...

cheers for the comments though!

nice!

Good to hear some "proper" synth music here ;-)
If I have constructive criticisms, I thought there was a bit too much modulation (ie wobbly pitch) on the chords at the intro, but I never like wobbly pitch! Is that some kind of Proteus?
And maybe a few breakbeats and dropouts would be nice but, again, that's a personal preference. There were some nice fills, but maybe going through the drum track and adding some spot effects would be good.

yeah, the opening pad is an old proteus patch i found in a soundfont - unfortunately no way of taming it down but it sorta works.

cheers for the listen!

Proteusness

Post by Paddy Uglow »

Hah! I though I recognised that Proteus sound. I bought an eXtreme Lead - I should've been loving those big synth sounds, but they were all unsatisfying somehow, and while I can programme my Juno 1 well enough, the XL was way beyond me! So I sold it again. Someone will donate me a JD800 one day...
"Repercussions" on www.paddymusic.org.uk is currently all the techno stuff I've got out there. I've got a d'n'b version of All Along the Watchtower(!) to put online sometime.

Thats a really good tune dude. Its so much better when the drum and bass artist actually knows about melodies and notes, as opposed to the same bassline repeated throughout the whole song.

My advise would be to change the drums a bit, add in a few more levels to it. Get some extra rhytms going over the top with some hats, and maybe a rapid quieter snare to give it a nice rolling feeling.

I've just written my first trial drum and bass tune based on the house of the rising sun and the ecstasy of gold. Used Massive, legacy cell and battery, and couple of samples for the main beat. Just pissing about really, just played in some guitar impro and recorded it with some synths. Some feedback on what I could do to improve it would be cool, sinse you seem to know your drum and bass, it doesn't sound all that proffessional at the mo. http://stashbox.org/manage_file/261782/mixdown1-01.wav

bad link

I think this is the url you wanted
http://stashbox.org/v/261782/mixdown1-01.wav
A password was needed for the other one.
Sadly even a drum'n'bass' treatment can't make me like "house of the rising sun"! Is the guitar sound at the beginning out of tune?
Keep the beats rrrolling!

Yeah, thanks for fixing the link.

Just listened to that back, and i uploaded the wrong file! that was my first mixdown before i changed the levels to quieten the synth and lower the bass other things. Thats a pretty crap mix. Guitar doesn't sound out of tune to me though.

Anyway i'm still working on it, i'll update in a new thread for some feedback when its done, instead of hijacking this one.
