UBS mic using 48KHz when working with 44.1

Post by rikki rivett »

Hi, I'm keen on the RODE NT-USB or NT-USB Mini for recording to my laptop. I always work in 44.1KHz though, and both mics only output 48KHz.

Will I be forced to change my project sample rate in Logic Pro X if I record with these mics?

The monitoring function of the NT-USB looks like a nice thing to have.

Thanks!!

Well you're not forced too but your audio will be resampled and thus compromised. That mic only outputs a 16-bit signal too, so really, if that's the guy you have to work with, I'd probably work at 48KHz for the project to keep everything clean.

If you are producing CD's, you can aways SRC the result down to 44.1KHz at the end, modern SRC's are pretty good these days.

Thanks @ Desmond -

I'm not bothered about working in 16 bit and the resampling quality loss doesn't concern me greatly either TBH...I'll mostly be recording vocal demos and the RODE has a pretty good sound with little noise.

I just don't want to change my workflow, so I suppose I want to know whether I can keep my Logic projects at 44.1 as always and directly connect the mic- is Logic "intelligent" enough to do the conversion in real time? AFAIK every Logic project has to have its SR set to either 44.1 or 48 KHz so I assume that's what Logic expects from any digital USB input.

cheers

It would probably be quicker to just try it and see. Set Logic to 44.1Khz, and choose the mic as the audio input. What happens?

Good idea but I don;t have the mic yet & won't buy it just to try ;-)

Is there a specific reason why you're looking at the Rodes? There are plenty of decent USB mics around now, some that do 24bit recording and 44.1.

Yes...it has great reviews, comes with an integrated pop filter and a monitoring function/headphone output. I especially like its compactness. It won't be my main mic so it just seems a very elegant solution for decent quality demoing without much paraphanalia.

I also quite like the Audio-Technica AT2020 USB+ for instance and it does 44.1k but then I'd need a separate pop shield. The Shure Motiv MV51 is also quite flexible but pricier too.

This thing looks practical as a pop filter / reflections shield, ....but boy it's nasty looking, somehow it doesn;t invite singing into t!t!! -Fame Audio Mobile Mic Booth:
