Hello everyone! I'm a pianist, and I plan making recordings of my playing on acoustic piano (grand piano) for my YouTube channel, for competitions etc.
I need super-quality neither of audio or of video (has no money for it and it is not expedient yet), so I'm going to use my photo camera Nikon D5600.
And I would like to improve its sound quality with some external devices (up to approx. 300 $).
The photo camera has 3.5 mm stereo jack.
I would be very grateful if you can give any advice what external microphone or/and recorder I can use, that worths paid money.
In general, what can be the best variant:
- external microphone mounted on the top of the camera;
- external microphone installed on a separate tripod directly near the piano;
- recorder (also at least two variants of installation if I understand right);
- any other variant that I don't see yet?)
Also, it is better for me to make whole the video (video & audio) at the same time, without having to join separate video and audio tracks after the recording: firstly, I am not a professional in soft, and, secondly, some of piano competitions requires a video made without any sound editing.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Yours.

Forget mounting the microphones anywhere near rhe camera.
I would use a pair of the Line Audio OM1 omni microphones via an interface that can provide 48V phantom power and then take an output to the camera.
The OM1 have a quality far in excess of the low price you pay for them.
Place the microphones in the best place to get the best sound (I normally staert with 20cm spacing on a stereo bar at about head height and about 2m from the front of th piano - but this would vary depending on the piano, room and acoustics).
Place the camera to get the best image you want and not necessarily near the microphones.
I do specialise in piano recordings, by the way.

John - would you say that if possible, it would be best to use the interface with a laptop or computer, record within software and then attach the audio to video in post? I’m just aware that the audio input on cameras can be quite noisy.

Can I just mention that the camera will be putting out a bias voltage on that jack output of between 3-5v dc, so any external interface providing 48v phantom power for capacitor microphones will need to take that into account and be compatible.
Reliably fallible.

Some questions that might help people thinking about your request.
Where is the piano, does it dominate a room at home or is it somewhere else?
Exactly what are the rules about sound editing.
Are you comfortable with video editing with additional sound tracks?

Good point...
If the camera hasn't got manual recording controls then you could be in trouble... FWIW I do this sort of thing a lot... multimics into a camera 3.5mm input, frequently. Works fine with both of my camcorders...
Another thing to consider is that the camera will almost certainly be expecting a mic input - not a line. I use a -40dB attenuator if necessary.
Maybe something like this would be the preferred option: https://www.tascam.eu/en/dr-60dmkii
... and just to point out that John has resurrected an old thread... the O/P has probably get himself/herself all sorted now.
