Ideas for monitor placement in this strangely shaped basement

Post by mark00sh »

I want to convert part of my apartment's basement into a studio. Leaving aside all the common complications with basement studios as much as possible (bass resonances, low ceilings etc.) I was wondering if anybody had any ideas for a rough placement of my stereo nearfields. Room kind of has a C- shape, with closet space at the narrow end of the C (making that area less usable). I've attached a link to a couple photos and a floor plan. POV is camera's perspective and F is for furnace.

That might be one of the most complex rooms for which we've had this question! Given that I think you're probably going to have to experiment a bit. Get a couple of boom-mic-stands and set them up in a T-shape and lob a heavy duvet over them. Try your desk/speakers in different positions and move the stands around to see which areas work best.
I might be tempted to start with the desk diagonally across the PoV corner.

I was thinking about that. Haven’t heard about much corner placement in home studios, which makes me think that it’s usually not a good idea? Maybe simply because it takes up a lot of space unless you have a triangular desk that fits nicely in the corner.

I suspect it has something to do with bass buildup in corners.

One of the most common problems in home studios is simply space, so if you take a few sq feet out of action behind the desk that can be problematic.
But in your case it might help deal with the absence of any symmetry around the room. And when you get round to planning acoustic treatment, you can use that big triangular space for a base trap. :)
But it's definitely just a suggestion. Give it a try and see how it goes.
My other suggestions would be on either of those two walls - i.e. desk opposite the furnace, mid-way between the stairs door and the wall to the right.
Or, on that short wall facing down the long axis of the room.
But again, experimentation is going to be key.
