I think we can blame finger trouble and John's unfamiliarity with the less-than-clear Forum PM system, rather than malicious intent.
I don't know why the PM system currently allows everyone access to global broadcast modes that engulf the entire membership, but we will investigate and remove those options if at all possible.

It's not often that we actually get to see a glitch in The Matrix, but rest assured (as Hugh said) we'll do our best to make sure this can't happen again.

Whoops - sorry about that everyone!

OK but can we still be friends?
Of course we can Tomás - thanks for your understanding
I've already had a request from one user who has been a forum member for 16 years but never ever posted, to permanently delete his account after I spammed tf out of his inbox

Yes, I expect there will be a number of messages flying around for a while in the PM system before it all settles down.
At this point, please don't reply to any of the messages in that particular PM thread, especially as at least some people appear to be receiving multiple copies of every PM sent to that discussion.
It will be sorted out and measures taken to prevent it happening again but as has already been said, on this occasion it was an unfortunate error by a genuine user and not a deliberate spam attack.
Pretty awesome that you can PM everyone. Reminds me of an internal company email which somehow got sent to 40,000 people. I was quite amazed that at least 20-30 people thought the best idea was to reply to all saying "I don't think this message is for me". This was then followed up by 1 irate person asking to be removed from this email conversation. I suppose as a proportion of the list this wasn't too bad!

I've had about 7 or 8 so far and I haven't logged into this site in years.
Welcome back ... but apologies for the inconvenience.
To recap for anyone catching up, a message was mistakenly sent in the form of a private message to every user instead of being posted as a new topic in the public forums.

Indeed ... and an oversight also! It'll be fixed but as you rightly point out it is much the same as the classic 'reply all' problem with an email sent to everybody at once.

Seriously, its just spam? Wtf? I thought I had my account hacked. Shouldn't allow a feature to contact every member. Thought some gobsh&te was using my account to sell stuff for a moment. Happened to me before on ebay.
