iLok Question

Post by Jez Corbett »

I've been avoiding dongles for some time now, as I work on lots of different machines in different places.

I seem to be getting the impression, although hard to get clarification, that you can use iLok protected software using iLok cloud on multiple machines without needing an iLok physically connected to the machine you are using it on.

It that correct? Is it much of a pain in the arse to use?

Until someone comes along with a better answer...
I use quite a few iLok plugins and have never had a dongle for them. As far as I can tell you can use them on as many machines as you have licences for and de-activate / re-activate them as required if you need to use them on more machines than you have licences for.

Not all software supports all methods offered by Pace (various reasons, including cost, technical reasons etc).

Generally, there are three types of licensing: Dongles, and iLok Cloud, are the most secure, then lastly there is Machine Authorisation (which is pretty much all I use when I get the option).

Some software specifies dongle only methods, some don't support machine authorisations etc.

iLok Cloud is easy enough - in the iLok software, you start a cloud session, and activate one or more licenses to the cloud. You can then quit the iLok software, and all iLok plugins will connect and authorise while your cloud session (and internet connection) is active.

If what you are asking is - can you have ten different machines connecting to that cloud and authorising your plugins, so you can use them on multiple machines - I'm not sure. iLok licences have limited numbers of activations, and I'm not sure you can open the same cloud session multiple times on different computers - my guess is likely not. But you won't break anything by trying...

If you have a stable internet connection, then it's pretty hassle free, yes.

You’d need to be sure that the ‘machines in different places’ have a reliable internet connection too.
