Yamaha N8 Mixer - anyone use with Cubase?
Yamaha N8 Mixer - anyone use with Cubase?
Have the option on one of these at the moment and for my needs it seems to fit the bill as I do not need a large amount of inputs.
I see it offers Cubase integration or at least did when first on the market.
What I am trying to see is if this will integrate to a modern setup or not.
I know it is FireWire and I would need an adapter to Thunderbolt to make it work with my IMac Pro. While that would get it connected what seems unclear is it it would be recognised or not.
It is certainly not listed in Cubase (12 Pro) as a known device.
There seems to have been a Yamaha/Steinberg driver at some point and I have asked Steinberg the question but no answers yet.
I just wanted to ask if anyone has experience of this unit and particularly the integration side of things?
This was the SOS review of the 12 channel version https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/yamaha-n12
Any thoughts or experiences much welcomed!

I had the N12 - same concept and drivers. Really nice and integration was decent. I sold mine a couple of years back as the days were numbered for the driver (which it needs). I think it was the Yamaha FW175 that was the last driver - same as the Steinberg MR816 series......It may work but then again.
As a mixer it was still decent with REVX reverb.
EDIT* should say I was on a Mac. Windows may have a longer life.
DOUBLE EDIT! Compatibility here:

dead from Catalina onwards. Works on Win11 - boot camp?

I used to have one of these, I liked it but have often thought, why did Yamaha never make an N16 with motorised faders, all one could ever ask for!
I sold it and went for the 01v96, though they have user configurable buttons, not quite the same as the N8/12 integration
Anyway, best of luck with it

Thanks for the replies guys - looks like it is dead in the water unfortunately.
As you say a Yamaha mixer that links to Cubase or a DAW with individual tracks rather than just stereo out being accessible does not seem like much to ask for and would suit a lot of folks needs.
I guess this has at least made me think what to be looking for and unfortunately the MG series seem to be stereo out only.I presume moving up the range will be out of my budget.
The search goes on...

Sorry, replied before seeing your post there. Does this mean it might work with the N8 then? Obviously no guarantees but would appreciate your thoughts...
Re: Yamaha N8 Mixer - anyone use with Cubase?
Quick update - I installed the latest (but old) drivers in Monterey and under Studio Setup in Cubase the N8 and N12 are showing up as available devices.
Had to bypass the security & privacy settings but all seems to have worked.
This just might be a good sign

I had an N12 for years but had to move it on as Yamaha stopped driver development a few years ago. Mojave was the last version which worked for me. It may show up as a device but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to access the device panel to set the sample rate.

Thanks for the info. Have picked this N8 up for not much at all so will see when it arrives!
Appreciate all the words of wisdom everyone.

And an update weeks later - it is working but quite a long route.
I set up BootCamp with Windows 10 and installed the 64 bit Yamaha Steinberg drivers.
Not convinced this is enough to make me change my whole system, but at least I got it to comply.

Used to love my N12 but I think it is a lot a hassle unless you like running windows (and many do!).

Recently purchased used Yamaha N8 mixer and I must admit I am impressed with it! I have 2014 MacBook Pro with Mojave and after installing necessary drivers for N8 it works just fine. Also integration with Cubase is very smooth.
