The three announced and very likely still coming (considering the announcements since) that I was interested in are still the Pro-800, the PolyEight (although probably a lot less interested at this point than I was 2~ years ago or whatever), and the Wave. If we actually see the Poly-800 in time for Christmas I'll be amazed, but maybe pre-orders will open on reputable sellers?

Also consider the little Pro-VS thing a must-buy if it actually works, and I like the silly little JP-8000 but would hope it has a good programming interface implemented in their app. They've certainly had time to do it.

There's a question, do they send SOS review units? On the rare occasion they release a particularly interesting new synth? The DS-80 is a big undertaking even if it is a clone.

The Hydra Deluxe is the perfect controller for a software emulation such as ME-80, or Arturia's CS-80 - or maybe the Novation Peak, which does some wonderful CS-ish things. The Hydra itself is damned good itself, anyway, and does a great analogue emulation, so may be all the CS fix you'd need.

Having experienced the 'interesting' aftertouch response of Behringer's Poly D (and having waited far too long for even an acknowledgement, let alone a fix for, the pitchbend bug - I ended up selling mine) I'm hoping that the keyboard on their DS-80 is a huge improvement, or I'll wait for the module!

There are a couple of artists out there that can copy any old master, painting, even forensic investigations prove nothing.

The problem with replicating old analogue synths is that the originals weren't consistent between examples, so even if they match the one(s) they obtained exactly there will always be someone out there with an example that sounds different.

Even analogue/digital hybrid synths aren't immune to this problem. In my 80s synth band, we had two EDP Wasp synths, one from early on and one from near the end of the production run, and while there was a good degree of overlap between the sounds they made, each was capable of producing noises that could not be matched by the other one. Also after we discovered that it was possible to trigger sounds by sending a +5V pulse to one of the pins on the link DIN socket, we found that while one synth would play a constant bottom C off the keyboard, the other one just played random notes.

I hope your not dissappointed, the Hydrasynth is CS80-lite,

about 60kg lighter
...no that sounds ridiculous, I am going to have to go away and check that.

More than that! The Hydrasynth deluxe weighs around 14kg, whereas the CS80 was about 92kg.... but then it did come in its own substantial wooden case.

I well remember just about carrying it single-handed on the flat, but needing a mate to get it up and down stairs. And that was thirty plus years ago. Certainly couldn't do it now!

so 92 - 14 = 78kg excess baggage

I actually cant get my mind around that. My heaviest lift is an 88key kurzweil at only a toe crushingly 25kg.

I under-rated it. I've just checked the manual and that states 220lbs/100kg.

Maybe the 92kg figure i (mis)-remembered was without the lid!

The weight isn't that surprising if you see inside the thing. The case was solidly built from heavily braced plywood. The keybed comprised very long wooden keys in a metal frame. Most of the electronic cards were housed in a separate steel frame, and there was probably 20kg of cabling in the thing. And the mains transformer was bigger than many beefy power amps. Everything about it was heavy duty!

...but it was still lighter than my Hammond A100!

Think of it less as the cost of the Hydrasynth, and more as the saving of the price of a DS-80.
