VE-500: assign patch change to MIDI?

Post by bicialta »

Hello!
i'm using a BOSS VE-500 vocal performer pedal with Ableton Live 11 on Windows 10. There are a lot of parameters that i can successfully change via MIDI, but the one that i can't find is:

How do i assign a patch change, or patch UP/DOWN, to a MIDI CC# ?

The email support from Roland has been nice and are trying to help, but they don't really know. They say that they "don't believe it is possible" to use CC message to recall a specific patch, but that i "should be able to assign patch UP and DOWN to MIDI commands. There won't be a specific instruction on how to do this, as there are a multitude of things you can do with MIDI".

They recommended and i did the following:
Turn on Midi TX and RX, put them on the same channel, turn on Midi Thru, set the device ID to 1 (on the ve-500), and turn bank out to MSB on the device.

They refer me to the two documents that come with the pedal.

The patch change information on page 18 of the user manual (VE-500_eng01_W.pdf : roland.com) says the following:

MIDI messages that can be transmitted and received:
Patch change - Bank select (CC#0, #32) and program change

However, in Ableton and in the VE-500 Editor, neither CC#0 nor #32 is in the list of CC#'s.

The info on page 29 of the Parameter guide (VE-500_parameter_eng01_W.pdf : roland.com) is not enlightening.

I also tried using just one patch and have CC change the parameters in the patch, but the effects we want have too many parameter changes than the 8 assigns that are possible.

I bought this pedal specifically because the store said it would be possible to change patches via MIDI.

Alternatively, does anyone know of other pedals that can do this?
I'm using it for a theater show and it would be so much easier if I didn't have to change effects manually...

Thank you!

I think I understand what you want to do. You can do this with program change midi commands. Not cc messages.

So for instance if you want to select patch 5 for the song, the pc message is #6. it’s always the preset number +1.

Or was it -1?

Just remember to use send on correct midi channel. :)

Hey!! Did you find a way to do it?

I have an boss rc 505 that I connect by midi to a line 6 POD Hd500x, when I change a program in the rc505 it also change the line 6 program (it just do it, I don'tknow how). I wanted the same to happen with the ve500. But it don't. I've been trying to dind a way to do it but I haven't.
