Keep getting greyed-out screen on iPhone with Tapatalk App or Safari choice

Post by Wonks »

Had this before on the site and it got fixed. Everytime I open up Safari to view the site I keep getting greyed-out posts until I pick the viewing choice, which is a right PITA.

Something somewhere has been altered.

I don’t mind doing it once after a forum software update but not every time I reopen the browser.

Can this be fixed, please?

I had it again yesterday evening as well. Chrome on Android for me.

What made it worse (although not a problem caused by this site) was that the selection buttons kept scrolling away off of the bottom of my screen.

Once I got to it quick enough and made my selection it seems to have remembered it though, and it's not appeared again for me.

If I keep my browser app open, it generally remembers it, but if I close the app and re-open the browser it happens again.

I think it was down to the Tapatalk interface on the website bing updated last time and resetting an option. Probably Tapatalk's fault again this time.

Likewise, chrome on android.
Also think it's tapatalk related.

I had the same issue once yesterday, but not at all today.

As Wonks suggests, I think it's related to changes at Tapatalk rather than SOS, and once you've clicked the button to stay with your browser it goes away.

With me it reappears if I close the browser app, which it never used to do, so definitely still an unwanted change.

And it seems to be that it would often re-appear if I changed sub-forums and clicked on a post with new topics. Once I'd selected safari (not a fan of Tapatalk) then that sub-forum was OK, but it then often re-appeared on other sub-forums (though i can't say it was every one) .

And then closing the browser app completely resets everything.

It's still happening for me.

Last time it happened back in mid-2021, it was all down to Tapatalk.

Neither do I. It's something Tapatalk must impose on forums who sign up to allowing Tapatalk access.

I've emailed details of this topic to the web team so they are aware of the problems people are experiencing.

Is it about a bicycle?

The web team have asked our developer to look into the issue. They are aware that there has been a recent Tapatalk update which could well be related.

Interesting how a third party app can have such an impact on the Forum functionality. Perhaps sever any connection between SOS and Tapatalk?

(Not being a coder I don’t know how practical this would be but right now it appears that Tapatalk is no different than a virus or a hack attack)

It's not a virus or a hack. It's a useful service option and a lot of mobile users access this forum through Tapatalk.

The only practical impact is a request for users to select once whether they want to switch to Tapatalk or stay viewing on their standard browser. That once-only selection should be remembered, but it seems to need to be reconfirmed after a Tapatalk update. No big deal, in theory. The issue seems to be that people don't realise the greyed out screen includes decision buttons, and without opting for one mode or the other the grey overlay remains in place preventing normal forum surfing.

I had the greyed-out screen a few days a go. I scrolled down to find the selection buttons (which isn't an intuitive thing to do, I grant you — the select buttons really should be at the top of the overlay IMHO where they would be immediately obvious). I selected to stay with my browser, and everything has worked normally ever since. This in on an Android phone.

Anyway, the team are looking at what's going on to see if there's a reason why some people still seem to be struggling with this, and they'll report back asap.

Same grey out behaviour for me too. If I'm on Safari/iPad, on the SOS website, and I click on a topic, I expect to read it on the site (the page I've just loaded).

Instead, the page greys out, and I have to scroll to the bottom to find a white dialog that's not easy to spot, saying basically "Do you want to read this on the page you are already on, or open it in some other app you do not have", which is annoying.

If you need that prompt for commercial reasons to direct traffic away from the website and over to the app, at least put the prompt *at the top of the page* where you can see it. The current behaviour is not obvious, or useful, imo, and just makes people think the site is broken...

This still seems to be resetting once a day for me in chrome on an iPad. I haven't made any changes to the settings and I'm not restarting chrome or flushing any caches or anything. Just going back to the sos forum page the next day.

Something has definitely changed. It hasn't been doing this since the last episode a while ago.

Odd that it seems only iPhone/iPad users are still suffering. I'll pass that back to the web guys in case it helps.
