Shallow Water
Shallow Water
Ive just bought another one of these pedals, i just want to share with you how effective and beautiful they can be if used as a pair.
One of my favourite piano sounds is one I made in Reason, and I've been trying to replicate this on a hardware keyboard, with little success up until now.
The Reason sound is a mixture of EQ and sample and hold, to get a lo-fi fluttery type sound, now I'm using my MX61 keyboard, and two Shallow Water pedals, and the results are amazing, because the pedals aren’t linked, you get this wonderful stereo thing happening, its so beautiful.
I'm going to use this combo on some tracks for my next album, I'll post a link when done.

I almost bought one of those pedals - all the demos I heard sounded amazing and inspirational!

Re: Shallow Water
I would love to hear this Piano sound. Just a few scattered notes here n there over the range of the Mx61, needn't be an instrumental piece.

It is, just get one, you wont regret it, but be warned, they aren’t for the faint hearted, you can forget anything above about a few hundred hertz, but that's the charm of it.
Also, it's at it's best when used very subtly, I've got mine stuck on one setting.
These are absolutely perfect for warming up cold digital stuff, and any guitar put through one has an instant tone boost that's so beautiful.

Re: Shallow Water
So is one pedal plugged into the other or are you running Left Out into 1 pedal and Right Out into the other?

There is a plugin called Velvet Drift that does remarkable things too.

Re: Shallow Water
Sounds like one in each channel to get an unstable stereo image effect.

Re: Shallow Water
At nearly £300 per channel it would have to be utterly spectacular for me to drop 600 quid on effectively one effect..

Re: Shallow Water
From what I have read, its a BBD chorus with an adjustable low-pass filter to get rid of all those nasty sterile digital high frequencies.
The delay time is varied semi-randomly with a S/H generator, rather than cyclically with a sine or triangle wave. Controls adjust the rate of change between S/H steps.

I've got two, one on each channel, with "slightly" different settings, I can tell you if anyone needs them.
They are set very low, with just a subtle tape effect, but what makes them work so well, is the S&H waveform, what always lets others down is they use a sine or triangle wave, its too cyclical, and doesn’t sound as realistic.
I know these are expensive, but sometimes you just have ton spend money to get a job done, and these are the best I’ve heard.
I've got Wow And Flutter by Interupter, that’s good too, again, it uses an S&H waveform.

Yes that is the one - (never post before coffee) It turns anything into a gorgeous pad texture. Combine this with Baby Audio’s free Pitch Drift and much goodness results!

Well I never, what a coincidence!
I've just downloaded a free plug-in from Cymatics that's apparently inspired by Shallow Water:

"Gives any sound a ton of emotion"
No, it doesn’t.
How he uses it just turns any sound into a total nightmare.
These things sound best on acoustic instruments, and with very subtle settings, my Shallow Water pedals are hardly on, just enough to ad a bit of mystery, that's all you need.

Sorry Martin happy, Christmas
It’s just that these things are so popular now, add instant emotion to anything, really? Like 50 years of shit and experience distilled into an app or a pedal.
Chorus and vibrato save the world.

Re: Shallow Water
Add distortion to that.
I was just wondering what it is about the right type of distortion that is so pleasing, either used subtly or in great excess. But only the right type.
