I purchased the app mapping tonal harmony pro 9
You can write chords in the application
And it performs a harmonic analysis
but many times the analysis (in my opinion) is a mistake
natural F#m scale
In my opinion and also according to AI
The Dmaj7 chord is the VI degree of the F#m scale
According to the tonal mapping app
The Dmaj7 chord is a bVI degree
1 Am I right?
2 too many times the analysis in the
application is not understandable to me...
There is sense in what the app is saying. It's better if you see that for yourself, so I'll give you some hints. The app is referencing the chord degrees to the major scale.
The notation I ii iii IV ... is often used for chords. For notes let's use 1 2 3 4 ... A major scale is :
The F♮ (or E♯) in the harmonic minor instead of the E in the natural minor doesn't change D from a ♭VI to a VI. Answer merlyn's question and you will see.

A major scale is :
If we just deal with notes first -- F# to D is the interval of a minor sixth. Using numbers a minor scale is :
1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 1
What you have to realise is that the sixth degree of a minor scale is the interval of a minor sixth from the root. Roman numeral notation uses the interval from the root.
VI means a major chord a major sixth from the root.
bVI means a major chord a minor sixth from the root, which is right for the natural minor.
