Travis Scott buzzy vocals

Post by monarck »

I notice in a lot of Travis' songs there seems to be this buzzy kinda sound and I am wondering if anyone knows a plugin that could add that effect or what is done to the vocal. It also sounds like the autotune is super buzzy as well but I can't seem to figure out how he achieves this. I know most of the sound is just his voice but my voice also has the natural crisp buzz sound to it but I can't get it pronounced in the mix without it destroying the high ends. I've tried everything from parallel distortion, eq, bit crushers, saturation, etc and I haven't been able to get it to sound good. I use a WA-8000 mic. Any recommendations or ideas would be hugely appreciated. I added some songs for examples.

Not exactly sure what you mean by ‘buzzy’, seems like a particular frequency you’re talking about? Can you point that out? If I understand you correctly you’re saying you have the same frequency in your voice you’d like to boost?

I’m sure there’s a technical term for it but I just don’t what to call it other than buzz, You’ll be able to hear it in the examples. But yes if it’s a frequency I would like to make it more prevalent in the mix without it causing unwanted distortion.

I had a listen to your tracks you pointed to, I’m very familiar with Travis’ music as well.

Grab an eq where you can solo a frequency range to figure out the specific area you’re talking about!

It’s probably saturation of a certain frequency you want. Layers of hardware and plugins to achieve that. You’ll never have the exact chain, but part of the fun is approximating it and figuring out your own special sauce.

I would use Saturn 2 to treat the exact frequency I was looking for, along with touches of other warmth and heat! Maag’s EQ4, Kush Clariphonic, and Soundtoys Sie Q have nice mid-high air sculpting properties about them that are pretty recognizable on popular music like this.

Additionally, a great deal of this is the character and capture of the Travis’ performance. In his raps I’d venture to say he’s rapping pretty quietly, and that helps get a lot more of his vocal character on the track. You’ll have to push the mids on an eq and compression harder but the effect is nice- lots of personality and intimacy.

Hope that helps!
