Defining Genre to Find Suitable Labels...

Post by Hexo »

Hello everybody,
Apparently I don't produce under a well defined genre, and my singer/songwriter doesn't either :headbang:
And despite liking it, labels keep asking us about our song's genre or sadly say it doesn't go under their style. Can you please help me define what style is my song in?

There are a million keys to perfection and they are buried in a million different graves.

Orchestral pop? Chamber pop?
Have a listen to similar stuff on Spotify and see what they're categorised as (this is the only reason I know that Chamber pop is a thing).

Thank you for your response. Do you think pop labels would be interested in such a song?

Sorry, no idea. If I knew what the pop music industry wanted I'd probably be a richer man than I am now.

Hi Ahmad! Pretty straightforward sounding pop / adult contemporary to me, ala Cold Play, One Republic, Imagine Dragons etc.

Not to be overtly harsh or cynical, but it sounds like any 'label' you've talked to is giving you the run around. If a label really likes your music and wants to put it out, they'll come up with a marketing scheme within a genre that works for them to sell it! It's in their best interest to market and make money off of it if they represent your music

In the meantime, you've got to market yourself, so just ask your friends and family what artists your songs sound like to them- that's the genre! Generally, don't waste yours or a label's time submitting music that doesn't sound like anything like their roster.

Thank you Yeroc, good points. I'll do as suggested.
