Recording with 2 mics through mixer

Post by nobudiezbusines »

Is it possible to record 2 separate tracks in GarageBand through a mixer, specifically the Maonocaster E2, that has a single XLR mic jack and a single 3.5mm mic jack?

Although GarageBand appears to recognize there are 2 separate inputs coming from the mixer and each track has one input selected respectively, AND I have configured the track header, both mics are still being picked up on both tracks.

I don’t know that mixer, but try panning one track hard left and the other hard right.

That's the key to it. If you can pan the tracks 100% left and right on the mixer inputs you should get separated outputs from the mixer which you can receive in the DAW on separate channels. These DAW tracks would need to be set to record from the left and right incoming stereo signal, but they can be left as stereo tracks in most DAWs. That's handy for later processing.

For example, my setup;

Rhode NT1a -> Desk Ch1 (panned left) -> Left Desk out -> Microsoft Sound Mapper Left on Stereo DAW input channel 1

SM58 -> Desk Ch2 (panned right) -> Right desk out -> Microsoft Sound Mapper Right on DAW Stereo input channel 2

So if you can pan those Maonocaster channels... watch out for phase weirdness.

Unfortunately, the Maonocaster E2 is designed as a two input podcasting audio interface and is limited to adding effects (autotune, reverb, ducking) to the one or two mic sources going in to it. As such, both mic channels are panned centrally and there is no pan control for each mic channel.

It is not a standard mixer.

I don’t know why there are no pan controls, but there is no mention in the manual of even a hidden function to achieve it.
