Power amp wall mount

Post by vicmusic »

Hi,

I have moved in to a new studio space and I have bought a pair of Genelec 1038a to use in my control room.
The speakers will be wall mounted so therefore I have to remove the power Amps and put them somewhere else to access its controls. I want to put them on the wall, below the speakers. My acoustician says it will work fine but do I need to cover the back of the amp(with all electronics wide open)with something? Im thinking of at least cover the isolation material in the wall with fabric but would that be hazardous?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Why do you need to remove the power amps to gain access to the controls? AFAICS the controls on the Genlecs are designed for 'set and forget' usage, i.e. you set the monitors up to suit the room/rig and then they don't need adjusting again? The only thing you might adjust during a session is the volume but that can be done in the DAW, mixer or interface (or with a monitor controller) and, anyway, there isn't a 'volume knob' on the back of the 1038A?

However, if you do you will probably have to extend the speaker wiring (which probably won't but might just mess with the carefully designed amps and crossovers (it will slightly change the impedance) and you will definitely have to build an enclosure for each amp module.

Thank you!

Yeah I suppose you are right, I think its more due to the fact that my acoustician wanted full control if anything needed changing along the way.

And the cable extenders I already got, I would have wanted the rack chassis as well but they dont make them anymore. I guess will have to find someone to custom build them for me..

True... but it's a heck of a faff to have to keep pulling the speakers out of their soffits to tweak the controls during calibration... plus, the amps will tend to overheat if left within the soffit. it is normal practice to remote the amplifier chassis when soffit-mounting active speakers.

In fact Genelec used to make a bespoke rackmount adapter for the amplifier section of the 1038A. I know that model went out of production in the early 2000s, and the very similar 1038B in 2015... but Genelec may still be able to help with a suitable enclosure. Definitely worth a call to them or their local agent.... and if not then maybe they can supply plans to have a custom panel made.

But yes, the amp chassis will definitely need a suitable enclosure to comply with health and safety requirements as well as providing a sensible mounting arrangement.

Ah, I misunderstood, yes obviously soffit mounted speakers would need the amp modules remotely located for the controls to be accessible. The OP said 'wall mounted' so I assumed on brackets.

Ah...yes... different interpretations of 'wall mounted'! I wonder what he really means

Yeah sorry about the confusion, the speakers will be flush mounted, not on a speaker stand
