Freeware Stand-Alone Synth

Post by Dynamic Mike »

Can anyone recommend a freeware stand-alone synth download I can use for when I just feel like quickly trying out a few chord patterns but don't want to open cubase? I'm sure there were some demo's bundled with my keyboard when I first got it but I can't seem to find the original evolution disc.

Quality is not really important, it's just that I know that given my lack of self control once I've opened cubase I'm gonna be up all night. Again!

Why do bad things mostly seem to happen to people who light up a room when they enter it?

What OS? Native Instruments did the Soundforum synth which you can still find on a quick google. Pretty good as standalones go, but it won't work in OSX.

I find Cantible Lite ideal for such occasions! It's a basic (and free) shell for VST instruments and effects.

DO you not think that if you come up with a good riff you like you're going to want to open up cubase anyway to get it laid out in a piano roll?

You're going to end up staying up all night :P

Sorry, XP Pro. Might have helped if I'd mentioned it! :headbang:

I like Cantabile Lite too (but only the 1.2 version - dunno what it was annoyed me about 2.0, but it did, and it got banished); but for when you don't even want to faff about choosing a plug-in, there's always SAVIhost. Drop it in the VST directory of your half a dozen most inspiring plugins, rename it to the given DLL name, and plunk it in your Start menu... the only real problem is the 344k per DLL for a fresh copy of the executable.

*pootles off to see if there's a command-line switch for Cantabile which autoloads a VSTi*

Should be fine then - can't speak for Vista though.
