My nephew has asked me if I can help him get some equipment so his highschool band can record something so they can hear what they sound like. The school has a sound board for their use and I'm wondering if there is anything simple to plug in that will record what goes through the board. I'm not looking to do anything fancy with the device, just record. The sound person can make it happen with the board.
I'm hoping to be able to use this for a good amount of time, maybe even give him a real nice CD of his 'early days'.
Is there anything I should know about the board before I make a choice (I know nothing about the systems, I'm just someone willing to help him out a bit). I've done a little research and found there are Hard drive units and SIMM units out there. I've also noticed that there are 8 track and some with up to 24 tracks.
If you have any info (resources) on the web I'd be happy to read and learn.
Thanks in advance.
equipment to record from a sound board
Re: equipment to record from a sound board
Hello Tony, welcome to the SOS furums.
you could do with reading up a little bit on basic sound equipment and techniques, so you can look at the console and see what facilities it has.
a sound console is essentially a bunch of mic preamps side-by-side in a box. A preamp is a device that turns the signal from a mic into a line-level one that can be fed into a recorder or computer.
You want a mic or mics to record with, you plug these into the console and then you'll take some outputs from the console into a recorder. What outputs and how many mics or recording channels will depend very much on how you want to record and what recorder(s) you will have available.
try and get some more details and read up on a few basics, and come back with your questions. They're a friendly bunch here and someone will try to help you.
hope this is of some help...
