Mackie 802VLZ4 Level Knobs Not Responding

Mackie 802VLZ4 Level Knobs Not Responding
I'm sure this is a newbie error -- but the level knobs on my Mackie 802VLZ4 mixer aren't responding. They won't adjust the levels of the various channels. Only the main and headphones outs adjust overall levels. I can't adjust individual channel levels. Do I have a dud or, more likely, am I the dud? What am I missing? Thanks.

I’m thinking the mute/Alt switches or perhaps using the Alt output rather than the main output. The 802 is slightly to different to other simple mixers in this regard.
