Izotope RX 5 - Removing section of audio and fading in/out to create seamless transition

Post by uwish95@gmail.com »

Hi,

I am currently using RX 5.. I was at a field recording workshop last week, and someone did an RX 7 demonstration. I am unsure if I can do what they were doing with my version, but they somehow created a fade out, and a fade in, and removed the unwanted section of audio between them creating a seamless transition. I know they used equal power fades, and reduced feathering to 0 (I cannot find the feathering option in 5), and I think they somehow copied the fade out and overlaid it over the fade in, or something like that. I hope this makes some sense... I cannot figure out how to do it. Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

James

Welcome!

I may be (probably!) missing something, but whatever software you're using, isn't it just the case that you fade to zero at the appropriate point, fade from zero at the other point and then delete the audio between those two points?

I have RX6 Elements so I'll have a look at that to see if I can be more precise...

Just tried 'my' approach in RX6 - I don't normally use RX for editing - and it worked fine.

If you don't want to go to/start from absolute zero, after you've deleted the unwanted section you simply delete a tiny bit more audio, bridging the absolute zero point.

Forgive my ignorance, but being a simple soul, 'Feathering' is not something I'm familiar with.

Hard to know what they did without the context.

However, I can tell you that selection feathering is available in RX5. Go to the Edit drop-down > Preferences > Misc Tab > bottom slider. Feathering sets the crossfade time between processed and unprocessed audio.

Also, if you're performing a cross-fade edit on a track it is normal to use the equal power fade curve which gives a seamless junction. Other fade shapes typically result in a level bump or dip at the centre of the cross fade.

Hello everybody!

It might be too late, but this is how I do it in RX 8: https://ovechkin.xyz/blog/2021-03-08-pe ... izotope-rx

Thank you,

Hello Oleg, and welcome to the forum.

Normally we do not permit links to blog posts by new users as we have a policy against self-promotion, although we permit a limited amount of it for established users if it's relevant.

However, I have made an exception in this case because the article you link to is well written, clear, concise and relevant to the thread.

That said, for future reference we do prefer it if 'how to' information such as this is written in the forum itself where possible, as it is likely to be of more use long-term to future readers and will also be visible to the search function.

Thanks for this, but it's so fiddly I always end up just saving the file as is and opening it in Studio One and doing my cross fade there.

I'm very surprised that iZotope haven't added a simple equal power cross fade to the special paste menu.

RX is an evolving audio tool.

It started out as a specialist restoration processor, not an audio editor.

It is gradually gaining additional functionality with each iteration.

Who knows what features and facilities will come in the future?
