iOS (iPad and iPhone) Apps of worthiness!!

For current or would-be users of Apple Mac computers, with answers to many FAQs.

Moog now have the Model D app...
https://www.moogmusic.com/products/apps ... odel-d-app

I have both this and the Model 15 and they sound great, but I've had no joy with integrating them with the computer using iPhone/Windows 10/Ableton and the Studiomux app. The user manual for the latter is atrocious for the Studiomux Server element of it.

Having just switched to Mac am hoping I can finally get these to work in a useful way.

Audiokit make the free and excellent Synth One.
There is also aFM/DX model too and then a paid for D1 Synth.

I use them to record directly into my DAW as a proper keyboard really helps.

Are you able to get sound via the lightning cable into your DAW and send MIDI out to Synth One from the DAW to sync it?

See my post above regarding the Moog apps. I still haven't been able to successfully do it. Makes any iOS apps a bit of a waste of time for me.

It can be done, but not just with a lightning cable. I have the iConnectivity iConnectMIDI4+ which is a USB MIDI interface for Mac/PC which is also a MIDI host for additional USB devices and a pair of USB/lightning interfaces for iOS devices which carries both MIDI and audio between Mac and iPad/iPhone.

https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/ ... tmidi4plus

There is a smaller version too.

You need to set up an aggregate device in your Mac audio settings. So far I've not used it in anger, but it is incredibly sophisticated in handling multiple MIDI devices with different connectors.

I us an Alesis iO Dock II to connect everything up.
Seems this was discontinued a while back so there may be some second hand deals around.
Be aware that earlier ones did not come with a lightning connection as standard.
Fortunately my iPad Pro 1st generation fits in pretty well.
In Cubase, the iO Dock shows up as the target for the midi from whatever device I choose so can even make it follow the chord track.
Audio comes back in via a stereo pair to my interface.

Totally agree that you need to set up an Aggregate Device.

Looks like the Alesis is specifically for iPad? I would require someting for iPhone use. I do have an iPad gathering dust but it's a second generation one and incapable of running any of these synth apps. My phone, however, is an iPhone XS.

This looks like what I might need. I will bear this in mind for future, as it has three sets of MIDI DIN in-outs as well.

After years of not bothering with this music lark, when I rediscovered my love for it a few years back I intended to do everything "in the box" and have largely kept it that way. But strangely I now find myself with (as well as all the software synths and sample libraries) a Moog Subsequent 37, a DFAM and a Volca Keys.

It's starting to expand outwards. Like my stomach!

There's no hope for you now, my friend. Sorry to be the one who has to break the sad news to you.

You can use it with an iPhone if needed - just use a lightning extension cable....

I actually like and constantly use all of the KORG apps for the iPad -- iMS-20, iWavestation, iM1, both Electribe drum machines. They're really well done, sound good, and are a great bargain.

I've been trying out a couple of Brian Eno ipad apps, namely:
- Bloom 10 Worlds
- Scape

Both apps sound fantastic. You basically draw something on screen and the app does the rest - quite impressive how the music subtly changes over time.

http://www.generativemusic.com/

He's made a few more apps too, but just these two are enough for me right now.

You can't save what you've created in Bloom, but you can in Scape. Not sure about how his other apps work. If you like Brian Eno's music generally you're likely to enjoy these apps.

This dates back almost a year, but just wanted to update and say thanks. I finally got round to getting an iO Dock II off eBay, and it works perfectly with my iPhone and my wife's iPad Mini (which, much to her bemusement, now has a couple of Moog apps on it!)

Garage Band especially now it has Alchemy incorporated.
My wish list is small, I’d like a ‘loop’ function.

Then I will take the opportunity to mention a few of my favourite musical iOS apps...

- MIDI Designer Pro (the reason I own an iPad!)
- Cubasis (clever, but very wearing to use on an iPad)
- AUM (turns the iPad into a usable virtual instrument host)
- StreetlyTron Pro (sublime noises)
- Enso (great little looper, only lacking an undo/re-do feature, IMO)

The Fugue Machine, a four playback head sequencer, ideal for those Terry Riley moments. Love it to death on iPad.

Streetly Tron, worth it just for the Rhodes.
Animoog, worth it just for one preset, you can’t say that about much, soft or hardware.
Synth One, one synth challenge standing on one leg.

Synth One has to take the biscuit for thee most inspiring and most value app anywhere, it’s a one synth challenge falling off a log, I’d better not say too much, they’ll start charging for it.

Hi All!
I've spent hundreds of $$$ on iPad Music Plugins and the ones I use the most:

KORG Module Pro - great sounding instruments!
KORG M1 - Great synth sounds in hundreds of songs.

Galileo 2 Organ by Yonac, Inc. - not only is it FREE; it has excellent sound and is a great organ to learn how the drawbars work. It even includes the foot bass pedals. I haven't a better organ plugin at any price.

MOOG Music Synths - MiniMoog Model D, Model 15, and Animoog; all are excellent, and I recommend starting with the Model D (the Rush Tom Sawyer synth and the Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, Lucky Man synth). It includes presets for both of the synth sounds in those songs. Even better, these iOS versions all work in Logic Pro on the Mac, too!

MOOG MoogerFooger pedals plugins - These will give you lots of effects to work with and they're just plain fun to play with. Remember how you felt the first time you used an effects pedal between your guitar and amp? These plugins will bring back that feeling. 😎

AUM Audio Mixer - an invaluable tool. An essential for every musician, IMO.
AudioShare - companion app to AUM and an essential musician's tool.

MIDI Wrench - not a plugin, but an invaluable MIDI tool to troubleshoot MIDI issues and see exactly what's being transmitted, including CC #s and the values being sent via those CC #s, plus PC #s, and more. At a glance you'll see exactly what MIDI devices your iPad is recognizing. MIDI Wrench is the Swiss Army knife of iOS MIDI tools.

MIDI Layers by 4Pockets - want to set a split point on your Keyboard MIDI Controller and use a different MIDI instrument for each section, maybe a Bass sound on the left hand and a famous piano sound on the right hand? Layers makes that and much more possible. A tool you didn't know you needed until you use it and discover the new possibilities it opens up.

FabFilter plugins are my favorite plugins on iPad. Besides being great plugins, the iPad versions are very lean on the iPad's limited resources. These are just excellent plugins, and when on sale, they're an exceptional deal.

Cubasis DAW by Steinberg - it offers about as much as an iPad's resources can handle. People ask for more, but let's face it. The iPad's RAM and small storage are the realistic limitations of the iPad music creation world.

Logic Pro for iPad - but you need a hefty iPad, preferably an M-series iPad Pro.

If all I could have was just what I listed above, I'd be just fine to create music on an iPad.
